Yet ANOTHER dyno result

Sorry ya had to wait so long,Sam ;)

Bike: 78 750F
        836 Bore
        ported K8 head
        Megacycle 125/65 cam
        Stock '78 750 carbs (125 mains)
        Stock airbox(drilled, K&N filter)
        Dyna S ignition
        Dyna 3.0 coils
        Kerker 4-1 Exhaust w/ med. competition baffle


        I put this bike on the dyno for the express purpose of getting a chart of how the engine eats fuel and how that, in return, affects performance. What I got will not only help tune the bike I have, but also give #'s to compare with the bike I'm putting together. First dyno run for me, pretty happy with the info it provided :)

  I've already dropped the needles since this run and the midrange is better. Still have to work on the idle circuit, but I won't be making any more carb adjustments 'til I get the fuel levels in the bowls straightened out. Here's the related topic (It's a pretty long read :P):

Congratulations Sean. I've been following with interest and it looks like you're taking a methodical approach to dialing in the carburation.

I remember working through all that with my 810 moons ago. It was a production racer so it was wfo most of the time, had hollowed out stock pipes. (everybody cheated) I'll send you a picture of what I did to the stock box besides drilling.

Thanks Brent. Yeah, the problem with going from fixing brakes and gapping points to doing a complete rebuild with all that engine work is that I had to learn a lot of stuff all at once. Some areas, like the carbs, got studied initially but not in depth. Float height adjustment, idle adjusting, assembly/disassembly, etc. were all looked at, but really only enough to get the job done. Now I'm coming back to it for further testing/analysis/trial&error/voodoo witchcraft in order to gain a fuller understanding of how the different carb circuits affect each other and, in turn, affect the performance of the bike. My brain hurts :D :D

  New shop called Godspeed on San Pablo Ave in Oakland. Pretty nice shop if you ever want to check it out. Employs a lot of the East Bay Rats MC club.

yeah, i ride past that shop all the time, and heard it was an east bay rats dive. i'll have to check it out. which shop were they - meticulously organized or hole in the wall?

What number cam dose this motor run Sean ?

When you consider that these are only slightley modded street motors, the figures you have both acheived are quite good.
Remember the stock motor of a K only kicks out about 55/57 at the rear wheel,  if you add about 10 or 12 bhp that you have lost in transmission it takes you a lot closer to Dick Manns factory Daytona Winner.(think it was about 87bhp)  ;D ;D ;D ;)

   I forgot who told me when I was first putting this together that 80 bhp was not an unreasonable # to squeeze out of the components in this engine. I'm pretty sure that I had a better top # when I had the '76 carbs and pods on. If this wasn't my only mode of transportation I would be tempted to to try for more, but that's what the "roller" in the garage is for ;)

No glass ;D

I wacked off the stand pipe in an old set of bowls. Added clear platic tubing which I then zip tied up.

Then I set the carbs level and compare the fluid in the plastic tubing.

Ajust floats till they match and are at the proper level.

I think I posted pictures in an old old post of Bob wessner.

I'll see if I still have the pic's on the computer in the shop.

   Nice thing about the '78 carbs is that the fuel drains from the overflow tube, via a passage in the bottom of the float bowl, when you crack the drain screws. No need to whack off the standpipe. The really un-nice thing about these carbs is that the float bowls screw on and are damn near impossible to remove while the carbs are on the bike :(

   I'm going to clean and re-adjust my '76 set just in case I end up putting them back on (the pods that fit them made the highest rpm riding really nice). I've got a nasty set of parts carbs that I just happened to snap a standpipe from one of the bowls(it had a bad weld "fix" from a previous break). Will use your method in setting them up. Thanks :)

  From what I've experienced while fiddling around with this bike I'll be disappointed if you don't make 80 bhp >:( ;D

First off ...solid performance Sean. Sam, you should get some more if for no other reason your 34mm intake valve.

Hope so Mike, when you consider we are already on 60 with the stock motor.
The carbs, pipes and ignition should release more than they are doing at the moment, when tied in with the big bore, cam and head work.
Also not forgetting the plugs, the way they have cleaned up the running of the motor is unreal. :o  I would like to see if theres any bhp improvement just from them alone.

Ear plugs, you put them in your ears so you can't hear all the missfires and spluttering ;D ;D ;D

Iridium plugs off Mike, loads cheaper than buying in the UK.

Bike starts easyier, can take of choke sooner, makes the motor respond quicker to the throtel, just the bees knees ::) ::) ::)

Well Sean its looking good maybe I need to have mine run on the Dyno to see what happens. 8)
