Broke the idle air screw tower
« on: May 08, 2015, 12:36:12 PM »
One of the idle air screws on my PD46a was jammed in good, good enough that the head on the screw sheared away even after extensive efforts to loosen it up.  I tried it all, PB blaster, heat (working with heat around a carburetor isn't fun by the way), smacking it.  Nothing, the soft brass just sheared off.

Drilled a pilot hole and tried using a stud extractor, but because the brass is so soft I couldn't get any purchase on the metal.  Drilled deeper, deeper, all the way to the end of the screws and hit the spring under the threads.  Still wouldn't budge.
Got a slightly larger drill bit.  drilled all the way to the spring.
Still nothing.
Next size up, drill bit into it and grabbed the brass and broke the tower - took a chunk out of it.   :'(

here's the kicker - IT STILL WON'T BUDGE!!

How the heck does a 1/32" thick piece of brass hang on to the carb body with enough force to defy any attempts at removing it?

At this point I don't even really care, I can tap the remaining threads and the brass will fall apart on it's own.  I suppose I'll have to JB weld it back first.

Does anyone know the thread size of that Idle Air screw?
