Oil Leak, from a weird place
« on: April 22, 2015, 08:29:21 AM »
There is this oil leak that has pained me far too long. The area that the oil leaks from, behind the front drive sprocket; it's not the sprocket itself, but an area where the chain rubs against the engine.

I have tried sealing the area many times, the sealing only temporarily stops the leak after about a good one hundred miles the bike leaks again.

What I am wondering, is the chain not the right one? Or is there some type of spacer or washer that I am missing?

It's a pain, constantly resealing and adding oil; oil is not that cheap.

Are you using an o-ring chain. O-ring chains are too wide and will eventually wear through the casing. Replace it with a standard chain and let's hope too much damage isn't done.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

+1 to both ideas above.  your chain has worn through.

a sprocket installed incorrectly would allow the chain to rub.
a (too wide) o-ring chain would rub.
both of the above might do the case in if not corrected.

wonder if that plug can be replaced without splitting the cases  :-\

My buddy was able to replace that cap without splitting the cases.

To LesterPiglet, if I replace the o-ring chain, because that is what is currently on, would that interfere with my torque? Also, a friend mentioned that a standard chain could bust because of torque. Could that possibly happen?

If not, I will replace with a standard chain.

To bowswell, What does that mean exactly?

However, the sprocket appears to be the same on each side; flipping that baby around would appear to have no effect.

Could the sprocket be too wide? Or would getting a less wide sprocket be outrageous?

Tews19, what is the name of this cap you mentioned your buddy replaced without splitting the cases?

Could that possibly happen? With these bikes?  hahaha....NO! ;D

If not, I will replace with a standard chain.

the cap, and its part number can be found in the parts fiche...

NON O ring HD chain is fine for a 550, that plug is a very tight fit and easier to do with the casings split, not saying it can;t be done without splitting but you need to be VERY careful

Lean your bike well over to the left so oil has no chance of reaching that bung. Clean the life out of it and try resealingwith a compound of your choice, you might get away with it. I would try an epoxy resin before I had to replace it.

Ran into this not too long ago on a neighbor's 550...The o-ring chains are just too wide for these bikes.  Diamond chain makes m/c chains for older H-D's, so they'll be able to handle the torque okay.  J & P cycles sells them pretty reasonable.  http://www.jpcycles.com/product/601-055
