Sounds pretty good.  I would not worry about the rattle for now.  If you want to check it make sure you have a spare clutch gasket on hand.  Be very careful taking tension off lifter plate as if you undo one or two all the way it will chip or crack.

Ride on!

You might have over filled.  If yours is a true 72 you might want to turn the chain oiler down or off as well.  There is a little screw you can turn in to reduce this.  Is it right near the kickstand?

Also check all oil hoses on engine and tank.  Especially the ones behind the tank you can't see.

Did you give it a tune up and set the points and timing yet?

A ride today:

Had a few minutes and convinced the wife to let me go for a spin. Started and shifted very well but had no getup at all. Tried adjusting clutch cable and carbs a bit...nothing.

Got home and dripped a bit of water on each pipe. 1 and 4 were not firing. Come to find out that the plug to the dyna timing came out for cylinder 1 and 4 again! I bet that'll change things. Im still a bit confused about which knob controls the idle but im sure its way to high now.

Also not sure if this is common, but fired with plug out of cylinder 1 to check for spark and the bike fired up. It was loud as hell from cylinder 1 with a Clack Clack clack.   Typical? Thanks guys...excited to ride tomorrow with all plugs firing...

Think your doing A-Ok so far.  What is your idle?  The big knob on the top of the carbs sets initial idle which should be 1,200 to 1,800 depending on the year.  This is a start point.

Each carb has an air screw that should be 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out from lightly seated.  You should have set your floats to 26mm with the new needle / seat combo you ordered.

As for power no 1,4 would do it.  Surprised if you made 40 MPH.

1 idle adjust screw for four carbs.  You've had a CB before, you've never adjusted the idle??

Maybe he made a rack out of parts and put two knobs in there?  Some of the early rack have a place to install on the right or left.  How were they 40 years ago darn if I know.  I was in diapers.
