Can someone please tell me what this is for ?
« on: April 20, 2015, 02:22:24 PM »
Hi all

I.ve just about finished off a rebuild on a 550f 1976 and it was in many bits when I bought it so I"m a bit lost what cable would attach to this and what it would do????

Thanks in advance

That is not a 550 casing. Is it a 500 engine? Either way, clutch cable.

That's for your clutch.  But not a 550 clutch...

The bikes engines are identical no matter which market. Looks like a 500.

+1 It's a CB500 Clutch lifter. You better make sure your lifter rod is still in one piece and within spec length. Also, make sure that the ball bearing inside that lifter assembly is there.

Definitely the cleanest cb500 clutch lifter and engine cover I've ever seen, is it NOS?  That little square piece where the cable connects is almost never in that good of condition, if you have a cb550 you have the wrong engine cover.  The clutch lifter for the cb500 is almost impossible to find, if you're not going to use it pass it along to some poor soul with a mangled clutch lifter on their cb500.

Thanks for all your replies guys, the rest of the engine is definetly a 550 as I have bought rings etc for rebuild' also stamped on cases.

The reason it's so clean is because I had all engine vapour blasted. I can't recommend this highly enough, it's fantastic! Engine looks as good as new.

am I correct in assuming I can carry on using a 500 case on a 550?

Thanks again

The case may bolt on to the left sid, but the clutch on a 550 is operated by the cable on the right side. Short of abandoning the internals on the 500 case cover, it should use the same bolt pattern to the cases. Just pull the linkage and adjuster cam from the 500 case so as not to interfere with 550 cases.

If you pull all the internals you'd have a big hole in the middle where the clutch adjuster was, you'll probably want to leave that in there and make sure it doesn't extend far enough back to interfere with anything.  It also has a hole in the top where the clutch cable would come out, you might want to plug that to keep water and gunk out.

Alternatively, I'm sure you could find someone on the forum willing to buy the cover from you since it's in such amazing shape. You could then just source a correct CB550 cover.
