So what kind of battery is everyone running? (CB750)
« on: April 27, 2015, 11:04:33 AM »
I've tried everything in regards to search keywords, but most of the things that come up for replacement (new) batteries are posts of old (new) bikes that say they are going to throw a new battery in them. No real details to what brand/type of battery is recommended. I know there are a slew of differences like lithium, AGM, etc but is there one specific one that the masses prefer?

Also this is probably a dumb question, but I understand to get a bike started 4 things are needed compression/air/fuel/spark, so is it possible to kick start a CB750 dead cold without a good battery? For example if the battery reads less than 12v but all lights work?

I think it depends on what you are using the bike for. If it is a daily rider, not trying to save any weight or space, I would recommend an AGM battery. For my 750 I used a scorpion AGM battery, it fit in factory location, does its job, and it is sealed so no maintenance/filling.

Not sure exactly what kind of riding I'll be doing (at this moment it's looking like a weekend warrior since I have a daily), I just got it earlier this month and trying to get it running again. The PO mentioned it had a "new" battery, but after charging it once trying to get the bike started and charging it again it doesn't read 12v, it does have some plastic screws at the top, I'm assuming that's what you meant in regards to maintenance filling? Sorry I've never had any experience with these types of batteries (only owned AGM) so could that be my problem? I figured I might just pick up a new battery, but didn't realize they are a bit pricey.

You need to fill with distiller water if it has caps

Does it matter if I already charged it / hooked it up / and recharged it already? does it have any irreversible affect if it's been dry?

Yes, if it was dry, it probably is sulfated....never to retain a usable charge again.

It is possible to kick start a CB with a battery in less than optimum charge state.

If the battery in your bike was dehydrated and run that way, at a minimum you need to refill with distilled water and probably use a "Battery Restore" kit to put some juice back in the soup, so to speak.

AGM batteries are probably the best value in terms of price and dependability. MotoBatt or Scorpion are both excellent brands. Gel batteries get a strong nod too!

i put a shorai in my cb550.
It weighs ... nothing, or close to it.
And it cranks the bike so fast it's as though there is no compression (but there is).
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Someone posted this link to a NAPA battery for under $30 w/o tax. I'm  Not sure who is using them, but that's a smokin' deal and if it dies early you can find a place to get a new one nationwide.

Hey Don - seems like you highly recommend these. What, other than size, does this have over the AGM Scorpion to justify the cost?

Size, weight, vibration proof, can be mounted in any orientation, smart charging. Can store themselves for months without any parasitic loss.

wait those aren't disadvantages to the gels right?

EDIT: just realized you were replying to the comment above you. So AGMs are not vibration proof?

I am also running a couple Scorpions in my 750's.  The Yuasa is the stock type wet cell battery whereas the a Scorpion is a sealed AGM.

I simply do not want the chance of spilling acid on my bike, it's AGM for me every time.
