What's this doohickey (at brake lever/MC)?
« on: April 27, 2015, 07:19:35 PM »
Just finished removing/lubing/replacing the clutch cable and lever on my '75 CB550F.  Figured I'd lube the lever on the right side, too.  When I removed the nut from the pivot bolt at the brake lever/MC, this little doohickey fell to the floor.

Forgive me if this is a trivial line of questioning, but...  What is it?  What does it do?  It looks like it may have held in place a "bumper" of sorts to soften the return of the brake lever?  This little cylindrical rubber bumper has deteriorated beyond recognition/usefulness.  Will I miss it?

Hold the rubberbuggerbabybumper in place..
Keeps away the annoying vibrating leverthat would otherwise result.. Gets so bad you have to hold one finger on it..

Actually have never had a bike that still had that rubber piece...and the vibrating brake lever can send you into a trouble diagnosis frenzy :o   Once you get used to it, it is easy to ignore though.
If it works good, it looks good...

Still available from Big Red. I would just cut a piece of rubber hose the same size. I did just replace it on my build and it was about $4.00 for a 1" piece of rubber. LOL

Haha!  I knew I could count on someone here to know the technical name for it!

Yep, I'm sure that would have been me.

No hose in the house, but I'll be hunting for a piece of wire to strip and salvage the insulation from.

Thanks, all, for your willingness to help and  share with such a novice like me!

Ha!  It's amusing to see that blown up photo of a hacked off 1/2" long piece of rubber tubing labeled a "Genuine Honda..." with a part number.

If you looked closer you would see it is not a hacked off piece of tubing but a poorly molded separate piece with flanges on the ends. Still not worth $4

Just cut a piece of vacuum hose to fit. The plate holds it in place.

The part you get from Honda is nothing more then a rubber tube anyways. I Don't know where powderman got his, but the one I got was just a plain rubber tube.

I didn't get one. I was referencing the picture from the link and the comment that it was nothing but a cut off piece of rubber tubing. It is clearly a molded piece with a lip on the end. Though a rather sh*tty mold it is not just a cut piece of tubing. I'm not saying a cut piece of tubing is not a better option financially.
Can't really tell but it looks like a few numbers molded in the near end of it.
$3.95 is a total ripoff for a .05 part, shipping I'm sure will more than double the price.

But the numbers molded in make it worth the $4.   :P

If the one CBDee bought was just a piece of cut tubing for $4, then who got took?

++I'd have to agree with that. which is why I urge people not to buy one but to just use a vacuum hose!  :)

The local auto parts store is sitting on a gold mine and they don't even know it!  They're handing out this stuff like fireman throwing candy at an Independence Day parade!  I should start a cottage business for brake lever bushings.  If the small stuff goes for $8/inch, imagine what the big stuff will go for!!!

That hose is the same as the carb overflow tubing. I have used a piece of that and you never know it is missing  :)
