So this happened today....
« on: April 30, 2015, 07:20:29 PM »
I was riding around today and the when idling at stop lights my bike was popping out on cylinder #1 and I looked down and noticed this split carb boot. Funny thing was that I could push it in with my finger and the idle would pick back up again. I have been noticing a little weirdness at idle when riding and this certainly explains it.

These boots were brand new from Honda and are about a year old. I bought brand clamps with the hex head screws instead of the phillips type and replaced them all together. You just hate to see that.

That's a real shame.  The rubber on that split boot looks pretty scaly like it didn't age well after 3+ decades of storage :(

Dang, that sucks.  Take off your carbs a bunch since you bought them?
Only thing I can think of is the up/down force used to remove carbs might have torn it...

1 year old.  They shouldn't tear like that even if it was NOS.

Must have been stored for years in sunlight or something.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Are you running pods or stock airbox ? Stock box adds a little more support for the carbs. Maybe check that clamp for a sharp edge also.

The boots are still quite pliable and soft so I don't think it was a storage issue. I also don't believe the Honda stopped making these either so they should actually be new and not NOS. Well I started to think about the problem and I've come to this conclusion.

I am not running a stock airbox, I run with these airboxes from Steel Dragon Performance. I got to thinking that since a stock airbox actually bolts to the frame in the rear, the whole carb rack is supported in the front by the boots and the rear by the box, the carbs are essentially rubbermounted on both ends. Since I'm running non stock boxes, the whole weight of the carb rack is on the front boots and clamps. It's kind of strange that it would just tear like that completely through like it did, but those Steel Dragon Performance are made with beefy aluminum so they do add a lot of weight to the whole setup. Not to mention going over bumps and whatever else while riding is causing the carb rack to flex on the boots right at the clamps. It's only a $70 mistake on my part I guess and ultimately I'm glad it's now when I'm home and not out on a trip or something.

I think most people that are running with pods, stacks, or airboxes like mine with stacks built into them don't support the rear section of the carbs and I haven't ever read about this happening to anyone else. I thought I would just share my experience with everyone and show the solution I came up with. It's not elegant, but no one is going to see it either. I think supporting them back here with some safety wire in this configuration should do the trick.

My pods do not have any additional support other than the rubber manifolds on my 750 and 550.

Wouldn't be hard to make some brackets to go from the original air box tabs to the carb rack for support. If you haven't removed the tabs from the frame.

This what I would do.  That air box is hot!  I see they offer a one piece as well.  Are there stacks inside?  Any pics of the inside of the air box?

+1. No additional supports on my pods and I have not had any issues with my 550

Steel Dragons airboxes have velocity stacks built right in that look just like the ones available on their website.

Here's some pictures of the inside of a box.
