Trouble Removing Speedo Gearbox from Wheel Spindle
« on: May 01, 2015, 01:39:55 AM »
Hi All

I've a problem replacing the speedo cable on my 1981 CB650Z. The inner cable is broken off near the gearbox and I can't undo the crosshead screw to remove the outer cable from the gearbox.

I've got the wheel off the bike and on a bench. I've tried to remove the gearbox from the spindle so that I can get it in a vice and that way maybe have a better chance of removing the grub screw and detaching the old cable.

Should I just be able to lever off the gearbox from the spindle or does the old cable have to be removed first?

Any thoughts on how best to undo the grub screw?

I've sprayed it with penetrating fluid and tried to free it by gentle tapping with a centre punch. The slots are a bit mangled so a screwdriver isn't much use on it.

In the past when I have had to take the front wheel off I've just disconnected the speedo cable at the speedo unit on the handlebars are removed it with the wheel.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Cheers

I don't know what spindle you plan to lever it off of. The gearbox should just drop off after removing the axle. It does have a seal or two but has to revolve freely. The drive tangs might be a bit stuck but I can't think they'd need any levering.
You don't need to get the cable out to remove it.
Try a bit of heat to get the screw out. There's a small (and hard to source) rubber oil seal in the cable hole that would be ruined by much heat. I believe the screw hole goes through, so drilling from the back is a possibility.

Try an impact driver, gently.

Thanks guys.

By the spindle I suppose I mean the axle. The gearbox turns with the axle.

If I grip the axle and try to rotate the gearbox I can't. It appears to be seized. I tried putting a tyre lever under the gearbox and levering against the brake disk but it wont budge.

I'll try some gentle heat on the screw. Unfortunately I don't have an impact driver.

The axle holds the gearbox in place.  Remove the axle nut and pull the axle, the gearbox will fall off.
