I tried timing the bike yesterday and am struggling a bit. Dynamic instructions say rev bike at 2500 and put it between the lines. Should they line up in both or just 1-4

I believe you should be a the F mark at 2,500, and yes both 1,4 and 2,3 need to line up.  You are moving the timing light clamp from 1,4 to 2,3 correct?

If 1,4 is set move the timming light to 2,3.  2,3 Has a sub-plate that you can use to make the necessary adjustment.  It may take a couple tries as it has a tendency to move a bit when you tighten them up.

Make sure you double check your point gap.  I think you want them to be .14" at the widest point.  You will need feeler gauges for this.

Sub plate refers to points.  What brand electronic?  Most are not adjustable.  Could also be the advance needs cleaning / oiling.  Also the advance stud needs to be true or you can't get your timing correct no matter what.

Bolt style does not matter you can move the plate forward and back to set timing.  At idle should be on F mark at 3k between the two hash marks.  I would not try to adjust those black pickups and there is no telling what might happen.

I got the original DYNA and it screams!  You know the one with the box on the side.  I think I am going to ditch it get points and the Hondaman setup.  You have electronic and and adjust your pairs individually.  It is dirt cheap compared to other setups as well.

The newest dyna lets you do all types of things, but price is $400.

The black boomerang things are set from the factory.  You are pretty much stuck with what you have.  How close are you?

Quarter inch on 2/3

Can you go back to points so you can troubleshoot further?  It is the Dyna, the mechanical advancer, or the stud that the advancer rides on.

If the advance needed cleaning or oiling would it work for one and not the other? Or would cleaning advance help them both line the way they should.

The black banans are adjustable and the timing is now set really well. Waiting on emulsion tubes, and plan on getting my float situations straightened out. The POs and myself bent the floats back instead of the tang. I plan on bending them back to where they need to be then readjusting for proper float height.  then hopefully I will have a good runner!
