If Carrillo rods are too spendy I have also been using the Cycle X superrods in a 970 for several years, they are beefier then stock but a bit heavier than stock, lot bigger bolts and bushed wrist pin ends.  I ran stock rods that I had shot peened in a 836 for many years.

This winter will be getting rods. I don't feel like having the bike down Any longer.

How much does the APE lightweight crank weigh? I didn't know they offered a combo with the carillos and that's looking very attractive for when it all comes back apart this winter.

I appreciate all the advice guys.

Last thing that hasn't been answered is my question about ring gap? All the clymer manual gives is max ring gap and I don't want to just assume the new wiseco rings are gapped

Ultra crank with carillos does not cost that much more than the CycleX cranks with their Superrods.
Wiseco has instruction about ring gaps and how they should be mounted. I've seen it on this forum where it has been discussed in several threads

About $400 difference between the Carrillo and the Super Rods.  For just a 836 that is a lot of extra parts that could could be bought.  The Carrillos are better then the Super Rods but for the engine size I think the extra money could be put elsewhere unless it is going to be for racing.

The Super Rods are only a few more grams heavier than stock....not a big deal. Carrillo's are nice....the best out there. To bad they don't have their "A" beam rod for the 750...that would be a great combo of weight and price.
I want to say Jay takes about 2 lbs off the crank... maybe he'll see this and comment. I'd have him knock the galley sealing balls out too.....well worth the money.

hes speaking on the crank/rods combo from either retailer, its less than $200 difference.

this winter the engine will be coming apart to update everything i didnt feel like doing now. primary and cam chains, probably have the trans undercut, lightweight crank, rods, and lightweight charging system. i want a bullet proof set up that i can beat on whenever i want that will be happy with 11krpms every time i ride the bike. after the engine is back in ill be getting a decent set of rear shocks. theres really nowhere else to spend the money haha

Fair enough...the APE crank assembly was $1400 and the Cycle X assembly was $1000 hence the $400 difference that I stated after looking on there web sites.  If you want bullet proof go with the Carrillos I guess.   Either way I have run a stock bottom end with the 836 so i would think you will be ok for now you will just be out the cost of the gaskets when you tear it down again.  I would still go with the heavy duty cylinder studs this time around though.

Damn those Carrillos are awesome but a little spendy for me.  I went with the Cycle X superrods and a lightened and balanced crank.

If cost were no object, I'd go for the Carrillo Rods, but I had to think what was going to give me the best value for the buck.

Yeah, Mick.  That will be good insurance with the 1000cc Mike Rieck billet block.  I have a feeling that motor is going to have some substantial GRUNT.

Got my engine broke down tonight. Gonna order a new cam tensioner and guides because the wheels and slide don't look too good. Tomorrow I'm gonna take the oil pan off the bottom and see how that stuff looks. Is that another paper gasket or should I use rtv or hondabond? What about the plugs in the head for the 4 head boots under the head?

Damn those RS34s are sharp. I haven't fitted a set but new rubber manifolds/carb boots are recommended along with ratcheting tie downs. Apparently, they do not go on easy.

With soft F2 manifolds on a 410 head............3 muscular hands on the carbs and one on a dental-pick to keep one manifold from folding did the trick for me.

Heat gun to soften up the rubber helped me to fit the carbs on the rubber boots. VM29's, and my last TMR32.
Heat up carefully without burning the rubber.

The F2 spigots are larger than all of the other CB750 heads.....those insulators will be a bit loose on your head unless it is an F2. Where did you get new F2 insulators....CMSNL etc?
