Clear coating polished alluminum?
« on: May 04, 2015, 12:16:49 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Im buffing my wheel hubs after hand sanding them and also some of the side covers for the engine...  Am I able to clear coat the hubs/covers or will it not stick to the polished surface?

Cheers,

James

What ever you do don't use the POR clear as you'll lose the beautiful shine. From experience, I picked it all off and re polished.

You can clear coat them but eventually (sooner rather than later ) the coating will yellow. I've found that polished ally holds it's shine quite well, to the point than a once-a-month wipe-down is all that's required.

Not all clear coatings yellow Thomas, most are UV stabilized these days.  ;)

Most clear coats are UV stabilized (unlike the original durable factory clear coat).  Clear powdercoating offers much more durability and resistance to chemicals as well.

Ok, Im more curious about adhesion problems due to it being a polished surface.  If you have done it before, besides yellowing, were there any problems?

Or should I just get them buffed out, re spoke the wheels and just try and somehow keep up on cleaning the hubs.
