New kid with a '75 400F
« on: May 08, 2015, 11:09:50 AM »
Hey all!

I've ridden for a number of years but have [un?]fortunately been shielded from the maintenance side of things thanks to well-versed family members.  My Dad stuck me on a dirtbike when I was 4 and I've been riding on-and-off ever since; started with a Nighthawk 250 and currently have a '89 Hawk GT sitting at home with the rest of the family's "collection/hoarding problem." Figured it was time to pull up the big boy panties and learn to wrench on what I ride, so this forum seemed like a good place to be with the "new" bike.

I am the newest caretaker of a '75 400F in overall good running condition. Have replaced fork seals and brake piston already; haven't touched the carbs or much of anything else yet. Unfortunately, I've already made the cardinal mistake of being intimidated by electrics enough to let someone slightly more qualified than myself (read: still completely unqualified) touch my wiring harness, and now I'll be heatshrinking some wires back together next week so I can find where a short is actually coming from (as well as attending court-mandated anger management sessions).

As you can see, I'm learning the hard way, but I'm learning (and I'll do my best to search the forums first before asking the same questions  ;) ).

Currently I'm in the RDU area of NC going through the nightmare that is obtaining a bonded title. Thanks in advance for all of your expertise; I hope to pass the knowledge along someday soon.

(That awful slip-on has a stock replacement, but will remain there until its retirement as a summer commuter bike, assuming I can get the title to make it a summer commuter bike...)

Welcome. Good looking 400. Hope you get through the title rigamarole with your sanity intact.  ;)
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Nice looking 400f.  Why are the electrical symptoms?   Welcome,  you can down load the manual from this forum...Larry

Sorry it's taken me a few days to get back, but I appreciate the welcome!

I have no headlight and the front fuse keeps blowing; There is a short along the black/yellow wire somewhere. I believe it is at the connection under the gas tank, as the insulation appears to be iffy on the wire leading into the plug, but until i can solder up a different short on the same wire made by my trusty electrician I won't be sure.
