auction at Cristie's
« on: May 06, 2015, 02:37:51 PM »
Ok for all you rich types out there in London 9th of July 2015 they are auctioning a Mk1 Spitfire completely rebuilt to original Spec. Flying, I know it's not a bike but god a brand new Spit if I had the coin I'd be there of course I would also need the extra coin for a new body so I could fly it but what the hell. Imagine. It is beautiful. What a thing for hopping down to the Islands on the weekend. #$%* I might even believe in God for something like that.

The spitfire and P51 mustang are my 2 favorites from that era.  I'd snap it up tomorrow if i had the money.

I may be wrong but I do believe the 1 thing both the Spitfire and Mustang have in common is their badass Rolls Royce Merlin engines.

Late spitfires maybe, I think they upgraded the engine during the war to keep up with the German fighters. I could be wrong though. P51's are my favorite.

No the Spit always had a Merlin until the time they stuck a Griffin in them but a merlin was infinitley hop upable as witness the P51 racers went from 1700 HP to 2700 HP I loved working on Merlins.

Was the griffin the upgrade then? I could be thinking of a different plane. P-40?

The Griffon was an upgrade now I've never played with one but if you figure that a Merlin tops out at 1700+HP the Griffon tops out at 2400+ hp with minimal frontal area difference and mods that make it work better (mostly cleaning up internals) as I say I never was lucky enough to play with one, the one I'd really like to fondle is the Napier Sabre engine used in the Tempest liquid cooled 24cyl H configuration sleeved valve 3000+ HP they've got a cutaway in Ottawa at the aerospace museum but they wouldn't let me touch it something about me drooling on it, #$%*s up the cases goddam museum it's supposed to be for the people, I'm a people, damm I'll have to go to the Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton my hands are getting dry again, used 100 weight from the Lancaster softens the skin wonderfully I have to go it's getting late and I'm getting stupid.
Bill the demon. I suppose that I love old piston engines not so much Jets (vacuum cleaners that smell bad and are noisy) but I'm happy with any thing from a 55 hp Continental to a Wright 3350 32W at 3450 hp.

I thought we were talking high performance planes, not piper cubs.
