Tech question Help
« on: May 13, 2015, 08:44:52 PM »
Gentlemen,
I am getting an old 78 CB750k  up and running. While working on it I was jumping power from a Harley Battery.  Well I hooked the jumper cables up wrong.  The bike is now running good. According to my cheap multimeter it is charging about 13.8 volts at 4k Rpm.  is this about right.  What damage could I have done by reversing the polarity, for a very short time. say 5 seconds. Thanks.

The rectifier and it's red and green wires are the most susceptible to damage from reversed battery connections. From your voltage measurements, you may have been lucky. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Thanks, was worried I might have fried the stator.  I will check the rectifier and wiring.  If I remember correctly it works like a diode and continuity will only read in one direction. Am I correct?  Man it has been a long time since I did wrenching on a bike!  Retired now and have a 78 Honda and a 2000 Moto Guzzi.  The Honda set for 25 years and the Moto Guzzi set for 10-12 years.  Don't have much money in them.  Wanting to restore the Honda and build a cafĂ© racer of the Goose.  I think after the reverse polarity, I need to hone my skills just a little :D
