New guy in Texas - CB750K8
« on: May 10, 2015, 01:49:16 AM »
Hi all!  I just picked up a 1978 CB750K in pieces.  My goal is to bring it back to life, but in the style of a Brat with functionality.

My past includes lots of car stuff - Porsche air cooled things as well as new and old MINI/Minis.  I even had a motorsports shop for a while.

My bike experience is a lot more limited.  I had a Ducati Monster and a Buell Blast, but only did routine maintenance on both of them.  Now I am tearing in to a major project without a lot of knowledge- always a good thing, right?

I've bounced around the country, and lived on the East Coast, Arizona, Chicago, Florida, even Dubai for four years - but we have landed here in the Hiustin area for now.

I Hope to help as soon as I figure out what I'm doing.  I'm the meantime, I appreciate any help freely given!  My wife came out into the garage and said "where are you even going to start?"!  She had a very valid point.

Hope to help (and ride) soon!

Hey Randy....welcome from Lake Travis. My current project is a K7.
I'd start out by painting the frame, if necessary.  Have you checked if the motor is "stuck"? Ie: will it kick over? Let me know if you need any parts, I have a spare tank for instance.

That'd be great!  I need a tank! Most me know how to get it (and if it has any rust).

The motor will turn and feels like it has good compression (no leak down or test yet).  Right now the bike is down to a roller with the motor in it.  I'm going to pull the motor to clean it up a bit, then rebuild the forks and check the bearings/bushings everywhere.  Figure I will get the seat and tank situated, mock everything up, get rid of tabs I don't need from there.  Then I can paint the frame.

Looking forward to the journey.  Thanks for the welcome!

Randy

The tank came off a running bike that I have now sold.  The clear coat is peeling and I bought a replacement from another member.  Inside is clean, outside not so pretty but have a feeling you will paint anyway.
I'll grab it out of my storage tomorrow.

Randy,

Welcome to the forum from another new guy from Tucson.  I recently picked up a '78 K8 and I'm in the process of getting it running right.  Mine was pretty well stock with the exception of a Vetter fairing, luggage rack and sissybar, all of which are off the bike.  I'm looking to do a resto/mod, something like a mild cafe bike with maybe some performance stuff later on.  This forum has a huge amount of experience and is friendly.  Good luck and keep in touch.
