How do you deal with sneezing inside your helmet?
« on: October 18, 2006, 08:38:38 AM »
Assuming it's full face, or you have a face shield.

I've perfected the downward blast: sneeze through the mouth with top lip extended over bottom, thereby forcing the exhalation downwards and out. Doesn't work if there is a nose full of snot, however.

Lick the inside of the shield to clean it while riding  ;) ;D

When you hold back a sneeze, the helmet is the only thing keeping your head from exploding  8)

Lucky me I have yet to have this happen. I mean the head exploding part  ;D

Now that I have grossed you out.  ::)

first i work through the terror.  realizing that you cannot keep your eyes open and you're going to jerk a bit scares the bejezus out of me.

then i try to let it go down through the mouth and hope it's mostly dry.
i love babies...

Flip up the chin guard

turn head to the left or right.

Sneeze.

I hope nothing flies on to my glasses

hope I'm still in the same lane when I'm done sneezing.

pull chin guard down.

Oh, I have an HJC Sy-Max flip up helmet

As long as there is no post mortem fecal expulsion.

Sorry, just had to drag that one up again!

You know, for some reason when I ride, my nose clears out. I have yet to sneeze while riding. I can even have a stuffed nose but once I start moving, it clears, till I get to where ever I am going.

i botched a gum removal session the other day while riding  :D  i spent the remainder of the ride looking in the mirror trying to find where the gum had stuck to me.  it disappeared without a trace.

i sneeze alot as i have allergies... if i get any on the inside of my helmet... just means i can go longer till i have to eat next   :-X

you know, like barf eating kitties...

yes, yes... i was just kidding

Ive only sneezed once while riding and it was one of those that doesnt give you much warning.

It got all over my face shield and I had to pull over to the side of the road until I could stop laughing :D.

Can you be more specific? Are you talking about aboard the shuttle or space station, or suited up for a space walk? ;D

P.S. Have no clue.

Nick - I just wanted to thank you for this post, as I made the mistake of reading it before breakfast - I think I'll skip it now... ;D
But, for my two bobs worth, I have had some disgusting experiences over the years, and moving along at speed on the highway, watching a great green oyster slowly sliding down the inside of the visor, but not being able to reach it with my tongue......errrrr, I think I just talked myself out of lunch too.........

off topic... kinda, how do the astronuats handle passing gas aka farting? ???

Isn't there a gas recycling attachment somewhere on the shuttle that you hitch up when you know you need to let a big one go. You know how it is, 'waste not, want not'!

Hold it as long as possible as my eyes start to close and then let it go as quick as possible blowing downward (across my chin most time).  Afterward scan the roadway and check for undeflected chaff on the inside of the visor.

Kinda reminds of one of the grossest things I've seen. We were at the Cold Kiwi Rally (held in the middle of winter in the coldest place in New Zealand's North Island). It was an overnight camp out and a fair quantity of beer flowed. The next day saw a lot of headaches and worse.
We watched a guy get all wrapped up in his warm gear with gloves, scarf and full face helmet at which point he started turning green and barfed. He was frantically trying to remove gloves and helmet but was too slow and his helmet filled up from the bottom.
Funniest thing was the only available water to clean up was in the stream with ice floating on it.
Almost enough to put you off your beer.

That haapened to one of our super nervous students. She too did not get the helmet off in time.

Every duck hunter knows that farting while wearing waders means it's your baby.  The noxious mixture of gas from duck-blind pickled eggs, sausages, and brandy comes straight up to form an undeniable green cloud.  The time honored tradition of blaming the guy next to you can no longer be treated as a plausible lie.  I suspect astronauts in full suit have the same dilemma.

;D Done that inside a one piece plastic rainsuit - after stopping at a pub to have a couple of ports to warm up, headed off to friend's house and stood up on the pegs along the way and let one rip, arrived at friend's house, stripped off the rainsuit in their loungeroom, and was promptly kicked out! Man, it had fermented and even made me feel sick!  :-[ :-[
