Carb cleaner as starting fluid?
« on: May 12, 2015, 06:57:49 AM »
Hi guys, did a search on this and I saw intermittent mentions of using carb cleaner to help start an engine that's been sitting around for a while. I have changed spark plugs, charged battery, and changed oil, and still having trouble getting the bike started. So I would like to try with carb cleaner. Is this effective? I assume just spray into the air pods? I have not yet checked the carbs though which may be the culprit.

Hmm, better rebuild carburetors, even if it starts now, if the carbs are clogged, it will not run well.

Never needed this. If carbs are clean, there's compression and ignition is adjusted the engine will fire no matter how long it's been sitting. I've restarted old engines in the winter without the electric leg and never needed any starting fluid.
