Plug gap on modified 750's
« on: May 20, 2015, 08:16:30 AM »
Generally, I'm curious what some of you with hopped up engines are running for ignition and spark plug gap.  After reading around, I see a lot of people running gaps up to .050" and a lot around .040" with single discharge systems.  If I have it correct, Multispark systems tend to recommend a narrower gap and rely on the number of sparks rather than the duration and power while single spark systems tend to recommend a wider gap to increase the total spark energy.  I see the logic in both for tuning for performance.  I am looking to optimize the engine's overall function from cold start to peak RPM's.

I have an 836 with 10.9 to 1 CR, Megacycle 125-75 cam, Ported head w/ OS intake valves, VM29's, and a 4-2 exhaust with mild baffling.  I'm running a dyna 2000, minicoils, and DR8EA plugs.  It's a road bike and not used for racing.  After some carb adjustments to get rid of a slight rich condition, I want to tune the gap a bit.  It ran fine last summer with a .026" gap but it's showing that it's a tad rich and I feel like I could easily open the gap more and get a better burn.

Could someone school me on a little bit of gap theory and provide some insight into how I should go about fine tuning my own setup?  I have some ideas, but I would love to hear some tips from the pro's.

Theory is the correct term............................I set my C-B-R gap at .032 on Iridium plugs. Fuel quality and wire/cap resistance will be the qualifiers.
