Is This Built Right?
« on: August 04, 2014, 06:18:40 PM »
5/20/15: Resurrecting an old thread of mine, see reply #6.

I did a mock-up of the case halves before applying sealant and am not sure things are quite right. I cannot get the crankshaft to turn the final drive shaft. It seems like the right gears in the transmission never meet to continue the linkage.

I did notice that in the photo below, the second gear from the right can be flipped either way. Right now I have that gear (second from the right) in the orientation so that it is furthest from the right-most gear (see the screwdriver for a reference). If I flip it the other way it rubs on the right-most gear. Could this be my problem, or may I be missing something else? I have attached other photos for assistance. Thanks for everyone's help.

are you sure that when you set the bottom half onto the top half that:
1. the center shift fork is in the correct place on gears
2. do the cases fully close?  (you have knock pins to align and mate)
3. are the gears meshing as you bring the cases together?

1. Center shift fork is seated correctly
2. Cases close tightly and sit flush
3. I can turn the final drive shaft as the cases close and feel it mesh to the transmission gear.

Turning the crankshaft engages one shaft of the transmission (there are two shafts of gears). And turning the sprocket engages the other shaft of the transmission. I just can't get the whole system to turn together, almost like each gear I shift into by hand acts as neutral.

Flybox, you were right. I had the center shift fork backwards, it still seated around the gear but must have interfered with proper shifting. Thanks for your help.

Resurrecting an old thread of mine...
I just finished building my bike and notice a scratching sound when I get to around 55-60 mph. It's almost like a gear is grinding, but seems more like a rubbing sound. It only lasts for a couple seconds and comes and goes, always in fifth gear though. I remembered this question that I had when installing the gears, see above. Can someone verify that the gear next to the screwdriver in the photo is oriented correctly? I'm trying to narrow down some possible issues.

Here is a video, not mine, of a bike with a very similar sound.
