More work on the Shovelhead today. I tested the starter and it turned over, so it appears to be good. I cleaned it up and have it partially installed, I am going to finish it up tomorrow.
I washed and cleaned it up too. It looks much better. I was cleaning up the outer primary cover I pulled yesterday and found some DPO repairs. Apparently it was dropped on its left side and the case under the clutch cover was dented in a cracked. Some PO (I am not sure if it was the guy I bought it from or the guy who stole it from him and modified it) simply smeared some silicone over the crack to seal it.
I am going to JB Weld it on the inside to seal it up and let a future owner deal with it. A quick check on eBay shows that chrome replacement coveres are pretty cheap, under $200 new and there are a couple of used ones for under $100.
I also pulled the rear caliper (the bike rolls SO much easier now), split it open and cleaned it. It has the strangest looking caliper piston I have ever seen. I didn't take a picture, but I will steal one from the internet.
Lastly I installed a new ignition switch since it didn't come with a key. Oh, and I spent $90 on the Harbour Freight motorcycle jack.
I will say am getting kind of fond of this bike and am seriously considering trying to get it to run before I let it go. It has come apart so easily, I even was able to free up the bleeder screw on the rear caliper. The thing is stupid small (1/4" wrench) and I was sure it would break. But a little heat and some oil and it came out. It just seems like it wants me to fix it.
