4 speed 550
« on: November 10, 2006, 08:51:09 AM »
Called off work due to the weather (65 and cloudless sky). Took 550 restoration out for a 100 mile shakedown to see what needed tweaked over the winter. The further I went, the harder it was to shift into 5th. No false neutral, just has to try several times to engage. Just runs out of gears at 4. Finally quit trying. 1 through 4 are fine, easy to find neutral. Any ideas? ???

That sure is strange.  Any thing I think of would let you know that something is wrong (other than the fact fifth gear won't engage).  Are there any other clues?

Sounds like maybe a damaged selector or the "star" on the end of the selector drum is loose.

Compared to my 75 550, there seems to be a little more end play, but not enough to notice without looking. What's the fix?

I would drop the sump and have a look up inside, if you end up having to remove the engine, again, at least its easier with the sump off!
