Don't Laugh
« on: June 25, 2015, 05:41:17 PM »
Don't laugh but I've just bought a 1974 Yamaha TX750. Why - cause I like a challenge !
It's had all the factory mods (deeper sump, oil cooler etc) but does have a problem with a balancer shaft.
Comes with 6 boxes of spares and another engine so hopefully I will be able to make a runner out of her.
It'll be delivered next week so I may get to post some pic's then.
Wish me luck.

You'll need it, that was possibly one of the worst motorcycles ever made.  Seems like you're up for the challenge and aware of its rep so  have fun with it....Larry

Yep, I was aware of their reputation and I've since done a lot of research. Yamaha pretty much fixed everything for the second year 1974 model but by then the damage was done - literally, so no one bought them after that.
At least I have my 74 CB750 all finished so I won't be without a ride.

I worked in a Yamaha shop back then and remember doing a lot of warranty work on them but also remember when one ran good(that was rare) it was a very nice bike.  Look forward to photos and a write up....LARRY

May God have mercy on your soul.... Seriously, one of the "improvements" was an adjustable balancer drive chain. Other than the numerous oil leaks, the noise from the slapping chain was responsible for a lot the complaints about the early models.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

When I was a wee lad of 13 or 14 I sat on my bicycle outside my local Yamaha dealership watching a TX750 on it's centrestand vibrate across the sidewalk and eventually fall into the gutter while it's new owner and the Yamaha dealer punched schidt out of each other, oblivious to the TX's fate. It seems the owner was attempting to elicit a refund........... ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
