Cam timing marks missing?
« on: May 31, 2015, 03:32:15 PM »
I feel like I'm asking a lot of questions but I'd really like to not have to tear into this again so I want to make sure everything is spot on. Anyway I can't seem to find the punched timing marks on the cam sprocket that the manual says should align with the deck of the head. There is a notch in the crank that aligns with the right side of the deck on the right side of the engine but on the left there should be those two marks.

Am I looking in the wrong spot? (79 CB650)

The notch in the end of the camshaft (first pic) should point FORWARD along the deck of the head when the advancer plate is set to 1/4 TDC.

DO THIS FIRST.

Then you walk the chain/cam sprocket around till it aligns with the bolt holes in the camshaft.

It looks like you have everything set correctly, as long as this matches with 1/4 TDC on the advancer plate.

Is it an aftermarket cam? Maybe it doesn't have all the marks? The big notch is most important.

The notch in the end of the camshaft (first pic) should point UP (perpendicular to the flat sections of the shaft bearing seats) when the advancer plate is set to 1/4 TDC. DO THIS FIRST.

Then you walk the chain/cam sprocket around till it aligns with the bolt holes in the camshaft.

Are you sure about this? On the 550's the notch should point towards the front of the bike, just like he has it set and seeing as the 650 motors are nearly identical to the 550 motors then there shouldn't be a difference.

Good catch. Edited!

Triple checked it was at 1.4 TDC, aligned the cam slot to head and the sprocket to the marks where it was before. What's weird is the Clymer manual mentions the punch marks but the other online service manual I have that looks like its factory doesn't. The top end was never apart before me so maybe they starting after '79? Bizarre but I think it's good, thanks guys.
