How do I remove a CB750 K0 Starter Motor?
« on: May 06, 2011, 08:19:04 PM »
I've isolated my starter solenoid and gone through all the checks and it seems my motor is the problem (sluggish turning, won't turn over). I'm guessing the brushes just need replacing but I'm not really a mechanic. Am I on the right track if I:

1. Remove the starter motor cover
2. Unbolt cam chain tensioner and remove.
3. Remove starter motor fixing bolts (2 of them)
4. Pull motor to the back of the housing then lift out
5. Remove starter motor cover and replace brushes
6. Reverse the process

Have I missed anything out? I have a Haynes manual but to be honest, I think it's poorly written if I have to come here to ask questions.

Can I just leave the cam chain tensioner alone, that is, take it off the bike then put it back on as part of the putting back together process. I'm uncertain as to how to find the 15 degrees after TDC on the #1 cylinder and don't want to get into all of that business, I'll leave it to my mechanic at the next full tune-up.

Leave tensioner intact.
 Disconnect battery
 Remove sprocket cover
Remove dyno cover or swing out of the way, pull off the reduction gear
Remove starter cover, and the 2 bolts, wiggle starter back to center of motor and pull up. Undo starter cable off battery.
 That should get it out.

Hi, thanks for your input. However, I can't get a spanner or socket onto the rear starter motor holding bolt and even if I could the cam chain tensioner blocks the removal of the bolt.

It's been a few years, but I thought all you had to do was remove the two 6mm vertical bolts on the right side of the starter, (as when sitting on the bike), then pry, wiggle the starter to the right to free the left end with the O-ring seal. Then angle the right end up and out of the cavity, under the tensioner.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I believe the cam adjuster does have to come off.
ToyCollector - I did up my K1'ish starter motor last year and my symptoms were slow and sluggish starting also. Found the brushes buggered to buggery-i-o. Brush dust everywhere. Easy to replace. New set from David Silver,..but I stupidly went to town looking for auto-electrical shop parts and ended up having a shop make a set for $75 - only to find them on Silver's 2 days later for about $10!
The cam adjuster removal can be tackled..have no fear, although I was nervous as well. I resorted to a trick I read on a thread here for re-adjusting the camchain and I have used it twice since. That is to insert a shortish stout allen key up the open end apply subtle pressure on the internals as I stab the starter button repeadedly WITH THE KILL SWITCH ENGAGED SO THE MOTOR WILL NOT FIRE....the allen key pushes in and out and when u feel it to be in to the maximum,....hold it with reasoned pressure while u tighten the locknut up tight. Works. Easy. U must not force the chain tighter than it naturally wants to go - so the pressure u place on the tool is merely containment - not forcing it inwards.
Regards
Mark
PS: Getitng the motor out of it's bay is a bastard. Not technically challenging but frustrating. U have to wiggle, prod, lever, shake and swear at it. It has to be de-engaged from the clutch starter gear..and it likes it there!

Thanks nancy, I might wait and see if anyone replies to the question below:

Can I just remove the cam chain adjuster and then bolt it back on after the starter brushes are replaced, if I don't turn the engine over?

Toycollector - Answer is NO...when u remove the adjuster, the camchain will be released and will assume a full slack state and u will have to adjust it back snug again,...by whatever method you decide on. Imagine the camchain is a continuous rubberband stretched over both your hands to form an oval. The adjuster is a pencil that pushes in on one side of the rubberband. So if u remove the pencil......

Hi All.

Halfway through my bike project and I've decided to remove my starter for good and go kickstart only.
Any recommendations what to do with the hole between the two compartment?
Should I close it or not worry about it??

Mike

CB750 K0 is a very attractive model that cost more than the other CB750 SOHC. Why not do an OEM restore and make it to the shiny "King Of the Road" again. That name it had back in the days.
Find a newer CB750 F1/2/3 in not complete shape if you like to create a lean bike with kickstart only and whatever more you like to remove or change.
