...Woo-eee...My ass is dragging...    ::)

I been modifying that solid speedo drive plate for over four hours...I can tell you right now, it is better to be a bit too loose than .020" too tight...  >:(

I got a nice snug fit, it looks OK, but the new hub engagement tang on one side is just a bit too close...it's pulling the center part with the two cutouts off center and binding the drive...I think I'll have to heat it up and stretch it a bit...

Otherwise it all fits and works wonderfully...    :P

Well done with the mod, as you found it aint that difficult to do , but a #$%* to describe! As to the "bonded" drives, all i can think is that they are from a later bike (after 82) as i never seen one like it

I thought I'd post these pics here as well...since not all wheels are the same...the hub without flats would probably be a better conversion if the rotor had the speedo drive reliefs ground/milled into it...

I also found that a 750 (?) rotor will work on a 500/550, even though the 750 measures ~11 5/8" and the 500/550 is ~10 7/8"...the other specs are the same, so it just needs to be turned down to the 500/550 diameter...this could be important if you can't find a good 500/550 rotor (but do find a 750 in good shape)...   ;)

BTW: The steel in the outer part of the riveted Honda rotor is harder than Hell!!!   :o

Yes that is a big chunk of stainless, turning those things in a lathe is tough especially when the steel has been well heated. If it's yellowed or blued they sometimes vibrate when turning although some guys have done it.

mcpuffett/other interested parties...

My speedo drive now needs to be assembled more carefully than before; not sure why, but if it is even a teeny tiny bit off, the ears won't engage correctly and it binds...I fould it best to assemble the modified plate to the speedo gearbox and then fit it on the hub and lock it in place with the axle...

Again, thanks to all concerned for their help!!!   ;) ;D

I find it's better that the drive has a little slack where the ears mate with the hub so when the axle is installed everything can center and not bind.

What have you guys done/plan on doing with that shark-fin water diffuser?? Leave it off, or will a 2nd one mount OK on the 2nd disk??   ???

Puppytrax, that hub with no flats is interesting--never seen one of those either! Did it have the "bonded" drive on it? Is it wing? multidudinous other questions i will think of later

Yup; that's the one...bonded drive + no flats...

Is it wing?

I dunno...What's a "wing"??   ???

IIRC, this came off the 76 CB550 parts bike...

"wing" as in Goldwing, otherwise known as a brass foot cos its big heavy and cumbersome! The 76 550K never came to UK and the 77/78 K3 i never took a front end out of, except for tyre and i didnt take the spindle out to do them as we didnt have machines then!---time was bonus money!!
