Non-standard CB750 shift drum
« on: May 24, 2015, 09:19:42 PM »
I recently purchased a 1970 CB750 transmission set on eBay (or at least claimed to be a 1970), but when I was inspecting everything tonight I realized the shift indent ("Birdcage") area is different than all the other's I've seen - see attached image.

Has anyone else seen a shift drum end like this before?

Did the 1970 CB750 use a different shifting mechanism?  I don't think this will just drop into my 72'... it looks like the outer roller arm wouldn't have anything to ride on, and it would need another roller arm closer to the case.

Thanks,
Chris

Looks standard.  IIRC, they were like that up to a certain serial number in the K0's

Thanks for the quick reply flybox.

Will it just drop in.

I just took another picture of the shift drum next to a known later drum for comparison purposes.  It seems to me the shift mechanism parts would need to be different.

Good idea on checking the parts diagrams for different years.  I'll take a look.

Argh... looks like they changed the birdcage and the shift drum stopper parts after engine serial number 1026143.

I could probably take apart the birdcage from the 1970 one and put the birdcage parts from the later model on it.... but the screw on the later model ones are "stamped" in place.  It would probably require drilling that screw out.

Unless there are drum differences not seen, I would use the latter K2 'cage' and shift mechanism parts on the drum with the least wear.
Drill out the stake at the retaining screw.   When you put it all back together, apply some red locktite, a light hit with an impact wrench, and then stake it again.
