need body filler recommendations for my stretched tank.
« on: May 26, 2005, 10:53:09 AM »
I just stretched a tank for my honda cb400F and need to prep it and make it all nice and smooth. there are a couple low spots that'll need to be filled with something and I'm not sure what is the best method. I heard of "gorilla hair" which is like a bondo but with fiberglass in it so it's supposedly better than bondo. I also heard of "icing". I'm not going to use bondo because I know it'll crack sooner or later. anybody know the best route to take? the deepest low spot is probably 1/4 inch.

I used Duraglass for the big stuff i.e. deeper than 1/4". It a fiberglass based filler. For the smaller imperfections Featherright (sp?).

That is what a long time bike builder recommended to me anyway.

I've had good results with those products. I haven't heard of the Gorilla Hair stuff. Icing is for filling real small imperfections I believe.

I do autobody work and have used featherlite wich is an inexpensive filler the same company makes a filler called rage gold.
IT IS DAMN STRONG STUFF. And it can fill some depth. 1/4 '' is the ''maximum" you should fill but it will do more. And the 3M glazeing putty is also handy stuff and can be sanded super smooth. After I finish the filler to 80 grit I skim coat the entire area making sure to work the glazing into all the scratches and work it down with 180 grit. Stay away from BONDO brand products, they will frustrate the crap out of you. On a side note are you having someone coat the inside of Your tank? If so get that done before the filler work. Good luck
