Applying for Salvage/Rebuilt Title
« on: May 26, 2015, 10:32:21 AM »
Seen several projects where people create bike using loads of parts they have lying around.  How do you apply for a title if you did all the work?  Running into some trouble getting my bike titled and it is pointless to begin this project if I just end up with a big fancy paperweight that can be ridden.

All I know about salvage titles is you better have a copy of the title of the bike that donated said parts when you get it inspected for the title.
This is easier to get away with on motorcycles since the only thing motorcycles have VIN numbers on is the engine and frame.

In California, you can apply for a Home Made, Specially Constructed or Kit Vehicle Title

You can obtain a Salvage Title for a vehicle previously declared a total loss by the owner or insurer

In MI, I filed for a new title using the frame VIN. I sighed a paper stating that I was the rightful owner and that the value was under $2500. I quick call to the state police from the DMV and I was good to pay my fees ($30+tax) and I was good to go with a clean title.

What state are you in? That makes a HUGE difference.

Yep! Some states (like California) include the engine serial number on the title/registration.  It can make for some issues if you buy an out of state bike with the stock motor swapped out.  If its an in-California state purchase, no VIN and engine verification is needed to get a new title.

I wonder if I could drive to MI to make this happen for my one bike, even tho I'm an OH resident....
