Engine stops when clutch is let out
« on: May 25, 2015, 12:26:57 PM »
I have a 74 cb550 that I had a top end rebuild done to last year. Everything else on the engine is stock including carbs and air box, the exception being a Mac 4 into 1 exhaust.  For a year the bike has run very well. A week ago the bike stalled at a couple of stop signs. It didn't bog, it stopped as if the key had been turned off. It would start right back up and be fine. 2 days ago I started the bike, it idled fine, revved in neutral, sounded great, put the bike in 1st, let the clutch out and again it stopped. No bogging. Restarted it several times, made sure I had plenty of revs and it would stop like someone turned the key off.
Is there any type of switch associated with the clutch?
Could it be that the clutch is cooked? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!  Bemil

Yes but it is for the starting circuit.

New battery? Check your battery voltage under load. Go check the Electrical FAQ for how to diagnose your charging system.

Does the engine shut off if you are in neutral and let the clutch out, and if you try in second gear instead of first?
