Installing the last bell housing bolt on a tranny install in a Ford truck and seeing the spacer plate sitting on the bench! Even worse (I swear I didn't do this but called some neighborhood kids on it once).....Fighting the transmission cross member back in after an auto trans install and having someone come along (me) and point to the torque converter laying on the ground a few feet away! Boy were they pissed!

Rebuilding a V8 well into the night and about to start it for the first time when I found 2 welch plugs {freeze plugs, block plugs, what ever you guys call them}that go under the timing cover, sitting on the bench, had to pull the engine to fit them, opened up the case and they were already done....?  My mate at the auto parts shop threw in a few spares without telling me  :o  I could have killed him.... ;D

Bench-pressing a manual transmission so many times and failing to get the spines aligned to get the transmission to slide into place, after trying to get it aligned and slide home that it makes your arms jelly and your chest hurt because it is resting on your chest between lifts.  Getting so frustrated after 12-15 time you are in tears from it stressing you out and its 1AM and you have to drive to work in this car in the morning. You are doing this job with the car on jack stands on both axles outside and then it begins to rain.

That moment when you lean into a left turn pulling out of an entrance and get a nice, hard clunk as it bounces you back up straight and you immediately figure out you left you damn kickstand down. Center stands rule!

Used to do that all the time, Dorothy would just fold it for me in the first turn.  Luckily I remember it most of the times now.

That moment when you finally get your bike reassembled and take it out for your first ride, and everything is dialed in and working great, and you get home feeling really smug and satisfied...and then realize you forgot to tighten the license plate screws, and the $&;#% thing fell off

You finally get the rear tire replaced, lined up, everything's great, and in the morning you realize you never tightened the headers all the way back on.  What is that noise?

The moment you wake up, it's 20 minutes till on the first day of a new job. Oh crap, you must have overslept, You throw on your clothes, jump on the 750 and make the 15 minute ride in 10 minutes. Whew 3 minutes before the hour. Oh wait this job starts at 8am not 7am. Time for Steak and Eggs.

New engine rebuild in my 69 firebird, it's all together but water is running out of the transmission converter cover. Dang machine shop got a frost plug wrong, pull the trans to fix it and the moment you realize the water is leaking from the heater hose above and running down inside the trans cover then dripping back out. This lesson came in handy during my career as a plumber. Always look above the drip before taking action.

I put new head gaskets on a Dodge V-10 a few years back. The passenger side head was leaking coolant at what appeared to be the head gasket. Fairly low mile engine. The head surface was within spec...no warpage so cleaned it up and reinstalled (with new gasket of course). Got it all back together....leak still there!! Tore into it again but this time I removed the exhaust manifold that I had left on there the first go round. With manifold off revealed a four inch long crack in the head casting. The coolant was running along the gasket giving the appearance of a bad gasket. Wasn't sure if it was a factory defect or the fact that the young lady who owned the truck frequently pulled a horse trailer through the mountains and maybe overheated it. After a few more high dollar repairs Daddy bought her a newer I ton Ram with a Cummins. Never did anything much to that one other than routine maintenance.

The moment when your oil pressure light flicks on in your freshly rebuilt 350f that you were just going to take around the block for a quick spin, that then turned into a 2 mile juant and then realize that you left your wallet and phone at home, your wife was out of town, your front brake is dragging a bit and you had forgotten to eat dinner in your excitement to get the bike going.  A lot of lessons were learned in that little adventure.....  ;D

ps - it turned out to just be a pinched wire under the crankcase cover   :'(

Only done it once, and yes, I had an audience... :o

That moment when you turn onto a major main road and ride through a puddle that turns out to be diesel.... :o  Didn't fall off but ended up facing the oncoming traffic, very lucky I was at a traffic light when turning, it was peak hour gridlock and I was in first gear, otherwise it would have been messy....

The moment you've just realized that after 12 beers there's none left when you thought you had 24.
