Powder Coating or Spray Paint
« on: May 30, 2015, 05:49:38 AM »
Hello All,

I am resurrecting a cb500 four. I am going to take the frame to get sand blasted.

The price of that is $100. Originally it was $125 but I bargained.

The Price of Sand Blast and Powder Coat is $225

I am 21 and broke. I should be saving my money on other things but I really want to turn this into a cafe racer without destroying my pockets.. Is it worth the powder coating or could I just buy some primer and black spray paint?

I don't want to have to worry about the frame after this for a very long time.. and hopefully I can put the bike back together again..Maybe I could bargain to 200 for the job?

Let me know what you think. I have no problem just getting it sand blasted and putting on primer and such but I heard powder coating is "awesome" and Lasts longer.. but is it worth the price and I've also heard spray painting is still fine.. HELP lol

Depends on how long you plan on keeping the bike.  If it is for just a season spray can.  It you want to have it for a few years or longer powdercoat.  That is a good price by the way.  Have the coater blast and coat.  Only way to go.

Powder coat is better and more durable, but if budget and looks are both important, appliance paint in a can is a very valid choice. It's hard, easily fixed, and much cheaper. A good etching primer and a diligent job with a spray can will yield very nice results.

There will be lots of other places for you to stretch your budget  :)

For all the reasons you mentioned powder coating is far superior to paint. $225 is a good price for that frame. I seldom negotiate pricing. I give a fair price for the work involved (it's more than just shooting powder on the part and putting it in the oven). I don't cut corner so I don't cut pricing.

Powdercoat all the way. Paint just doesn't hold up, especially on a frame. Mines on 5-6 years now, no chips or anything, anywhere.

That's short money for the blast and powder work, and you'd need at least 2 or so cans of primer and paint to do it yourself. You kinda need to do the swingarm and sidestand too, maybe save your money there and DIY those other parts. Tough to pass that deal up.

PC.   Tell them it is a "show bike"  maybe they take a bit more care.   $225 for sandblast & powder is a great deal.
If you try and bargain, you stand a good chance of them half-assing things.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Powdercoat don't cut corners you never know what you'll get when your not a experienced painter. That's a good deal, I had a guy tell me $480. Seemed like a rip off, now I know it's a rip off.

I hardly call $480 to blast and coat a frame a rip off, Alek. It's a heap of work to blast a frame properly and professionally, and even more to coat it. $225 is DIRT cheap. I'd be nervous about the quality, personally. I have had numerous frames PC'ed, they each run about $500 with swing arm.

Swing arms are alot of work as they need to outgas for 45 minute to an hour before you can coat them to get all the grease out.  They are a heavy chunk of metal that takes a good long time to heat up to 400 too.

Just because someone else paid less doesn't mean you got taken. There are many steps and procedures for doing it right. The ones who do this work cheaply cut some steps out. I always say Price is the last thing to consider when shopping a PC job. Good work takes time and money. In this business you get what you pay for in most cases.
$480-$500 for a frame and swingers is too much though. I'd be between $325-$400 for a swing arm and frame in black.

What is the name of your coater?

I think the real question is how much work is the rest of the bike going to need?  You can spend the money for a nice powdercoating job (and nobody is saying it isn't superior to rattlecanning) but if you blow your whole budget on it you won't have money to address other issues.

Did it run?  Those 500s were notorious for cranky clutches and/or transmissions weren't they?

So you're going to be out $100 either way to get the frame blasted.  If he's only going to charge you another $100 to powdercoat it, that would be the way go to.  If you factor in what it's going to cost you to buy primer, paint, masking tape, your time, etc., that $100 for the powdercoating is going to be a bargain.  And powdercoating will outlast paint for sure.  You can easily save $100 somewhere else on your build.

In the end, you have to ask yourself, "do you want it done right, or right away?"  Powdercoating is getting it done right...

The dude wasn't very professional he just wrote my name and number on a post it and didn't write anything I explained to him that I want done to my tank. I asked about sandblasting the rust on the frame and he said he melts it off in the oven somehow, never heard of that.

what a bunch of crap. I have painted frames from 15 years ago that have held up just fine and still look great. And original frames from further back than that, 40 years ago, that still look great.

Nothing at all wrong with paint if done right, and much cheaper and easier to touchup. PC is not armor plate, Once damaged it's a PITA.
