Where does the ignition switch mount on a '71 CB500?
« on: May 26, 2005, 12:11:28 PM »
Hi all

My project '71 CB500 is missing the ignition switch (there was a plug connected to the harness, but it just had clipped wires hanging off).  I bought an EMGO switch and it plugs right in, but I can't figure out how/where to mount it.  I've heard that it goes "under the tank" on the left side, but I don't see any sort of bracketry that looks like it will let me mount the switch.

Thanks,
doug

I'll assume it is similar to a '73, if so it mounts where most of them mount, in a small bracket
welded to the downtube just below the gas tank. Maybe a PO cut it off?

Here....
Theres a bracket that bolts onto the downtube as said.

Paul.

Thanks - PO musta cut her off  ,-(  There's nothing in that area.  Guess I'll have to fabricate one.  I saw a CB550 that had a bracked fabricated that fastened to one of the handlebar clamp bolts and put the switch on the right side of the bar clamp.  I could do the same I guess.

Those so-called "relocation kits" show up on e-bay frequently.
Whatever your preference happens to be. In your particular case since the original bracket appears to be remover, it might be easier to relocate it. Check your wiring, you may need some type of harness extension.

That bracket bolts on, all you will see on the frame is a piece of flat plate with a 6mm hole in it welded to the cross brace and down tube (plate that is not the hole! I aint found anybody yet that can weld air!)
