I think your customer had better appreciate the efforts. Hope the fingers heal quickly. Silvadene cream is good for burns if you can get someone to prescribe some if it is bad.

get your point but I only had some old silver graphic art tape laying around, Idea was to urge the owner to get a stripe painted on, and he agrees after seeing my two minute mockup. I prefer silver as it compliments all the chrome on the bike, there isn't any white anywhere

I know what you're saying mate, but I don't think silver looks good, and the stripe was originally white. That's just my opinion though, and we all know about opinions...........

Stared at the bike today in disbelief trying to figure out how the fire started. Waiting on the replacement wire harness, when I get it I may need to buy or repair the gauge wiring and handlebar switch wiring. Could set me back a couple hundred dollars and many hours of time(and time is very valuable at 68).

Yeah, I'd be more pissed off about the time than the dollars Larry, the bloody thing was almost ready to roll out the door before this happened, isn't there someone you can blame, and just move on? I find SteveO very distracting at times..........

The replacement wire harness came yesterday

Only had to sell one of my two children

Seriously though, I was very lucky...........harness cost was less than $30 with shipping. I had expected to be set back waaaay more than that.

Here are a couple close-up photos of the non-harness parts that have to be grafted and rewired as replacements seem to be unobtainium.

I have the connection kit from VintageConnections so I will be able to take the correct color wires from the burnt harness and graft onto the gauge and handlebar switch wiring and come up with a fairly clean and almost stock looking repair.

Also, I found a NOS replacement ignition switch for $60 with shipping. I think the old switch could have been the fire starter but really will never know with certainty...Larry

Spent the better part of the last two mornings splicing, grafting, and soldering. Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to connect all the wires in the shell and see if this thing will fire up(on cylinders not flames

all wiring back in the shell and ready for connection, looks like more wires in there than in our sohc

Finally finished repairing the damage from the fire. Couldn't get the low beam to work but I found out I did not leave enough stripped wire into the connector before I crimped it. Runs on both cylinders, sits and idles, charges, all electrics work. Whoopee!!! Started from a remote tank with Blendzall(nothing like the smell of Blendzall in the morning), put the repainted tank on, added a gallon or so of gas, flipped the petcock on and gas poured out of it

. Local dealership did not have the petcock 4 hole gasket in stock so one was ordered. Also, put the bike up on centerstand and shifted through all gears. HOPEFULLY, when the new gasket arrives the Yammie will be finished and ready for the hare scrambles.

. Post up a few photos once the bike is completely finished. anyhow it is off the lift and believe it or not I pulled the 400F cancer awareness bike out of the shed and started work on it after over a year lapse.

Well, October isn't too far off now. So, it will be ready for raffle this year.
Maybe your post 48 where you said you were going to fire it up was taken a little too literally? Yeah, bad joke. So, you spliced from the new harness into the existing harness? I would have thought you would install the replacement but it had lots of paint on the loom. It was an unknown I guess.

Looking forward to seeing more of the finished bike and resurrect the cancer bike thread.

How's the PC been running and are you riding the Triumph yet?

Triumph will be a winter project David, and the Golf Cart PC has been a great, reliable bike-kinda like "your father's station wagon" or a Timex watch. Rectifier quit but otherwise nary a problem. I was supposed to get a 500 four in the shop but something happened and the owner never showed...Larry

Well.........................when we last left the DS6 it was spewing fuel out of the petcock. I picked up the new gasket today, installed it and all was just dandy. So, I started the bike, rolled it outside, put it in gear and the bike stalled- clutch was seized and there was a puddle of oil under the bike. Unrelated problems but two more added to a seemingly unending string that occurs just when I think the job is finished. The oil leak was due to the neutral switch plastic innards deteriorating and the clutch problem was caused by this:

I was fortunate to find a NOS switch on Feebay for the princely sum of $31 shipping included. The seller actually had 4 available.

I plan on attempting to clean the fiber plates and sand/polish the metal. A set of new fibers is $60 plus shipping.

Hopefully these two repairs will be the last in a neverending scenario of frustration....Larry

It is becoming very clear this bike really did not fare well in its storage from whenever it last ran. The water in the oil makes me think it saw a flood or ran through several creeks.

Good luck with the clean-up, it doesn't look pretty.

I hope you are billing by the hour on this one.

Hourly it is, but I did not bill for correcting the fire damage, figuring it was on me even though I don't quite know what happened. There is a very cool app for the Iphone called hours tracker, which allows one to punch in and out with an hourly rate that you set. Keeps track of the entire job, bill is over 600 right now, but I may trade some of that for Triumph parts...Larry

He's getting a bargain, it could be far more expensive with other builders/shops to return one like that to service. These days lots of mechanics are apt to rebuild after seeing the milkshake pouring out. It is going to need a good heat cycle or two to clear any remnant of that stuff. Are you leaving that part to him?
Glad you are able to source the parts thus far.
Your willingness to refurbished and rebuild and clean-up parts is saving him money.

Hey Larry....for $60 for a new set of discs, personally I would go that route. I know it's a customers bike, why not give him the option? If you clean and put it all together and it slips, it will cost more to replace them at that point.
