Picked up another Yamaha Vmax Done
« on: June 03, 2015, 10:37:06 AM »
Picked this up yesterday 1991 Yamaha Vmax. Everything works and it runs great just a lot of cosmetic stuff to fix. The paint job is horrible, blacked out a lot of the chrome lots of little stuff. We just moved to South Carlolina and are right by a drag strip wife said she wants to learn how to drag race was like hell yeah. She drives a 2005 vmax so this should be fun.

When those first hit the scene insurance was really high but there are a lot of big and fast bikes around for sale nowadays so maybe insurance price has come down somewhat ??

...jealous...a couple weeks ago I was out on a ride, stopped for a soda and a smoke at a country corner store.  Along comes a Vmax with open pipes....stops at the sign, turns left and proceeded to rip it through three gears off into the distance....it sounded soooooo good.
If it works good, it looks good...

Well done with this one took it out for its first shake down put about 40 miles on it ran great.

Some things that were done.

-body work and paint the paint job nothing special cost about 40$ 3 can of flat black spray can one sheet of carbon fiber off ebay and some red pin stripping for the auto store
- progressive springs in front with race tech valves
-progressive shocks in back
-lowered rear by 1 1/2 inches and front by 1 inch
-new rear tail light had a tiny custom one looked like crap and couldn't see it in a dark garage
-new turn signals again they had tiny ones on it
-fly screen was *%$$% up got the flat black treatment
-front MC and clutch MC replaced with 2001 fjr1300 ones they are bigger and have better feel
-exhaust is some european one sounds awsome
-alot of polishing and painting and misc parts bike was in a garage fire  :o
-handle bars, mirrors,levers

A couple of things for those that havent had a vmax

-the gas tank isnt a tank it a expensive air box cover lol the gas tank is under the seat you push two levers by the rear shocks and the middle part of the seat flips up for the tank.

- the big old air scoops are fake they do nothing one side is completely blocked no air get through some electronics are mounted there the other side is open some might cool some but its not directed or anything.

Next up

-getting two brackets made and then can mount the hybusa calipers and rotors on with actually brake good
- stage 7 jet kit

Love these bikes they are so much fun.

Matt

It handles good the front end is one of the best I have felt the rear is rough. Going out of the neighborhood I can feel it on the bumps but once up to speed it's great. I have the rear set up on the highest setting was worried about clearance will adjust it once I get more comfortable.

Steve if you ever get up here in this area your more than welcome to take it for a ride they are fun bikes.

I chased one for a while on craigslist but it was a scam. They were very good, had an answer for every question but the same ad was in every city and they were willing to hold the money in an Ebay account until I approved the bike. nice of them.
