What are these electrical parts, and what do they do?
« on: June 07, 2015, 10:31:12 AM »
Hello, I recently removed the old wiring harness from my motorcycle, and am in the process of installing a new one.  I have some general questions about what certain electrical parts are, and what they do.  I took some pictures, and put my questions in the pictures.  Any help would  be greatly appreciated.  And happy Sunday ;)

The box is a "Cable Harness Box" and is NLA.

Save this link, refer to it whenever you have a question about a name or part number.

BTW - I am currently restoring a 550F too.

the long green "thing" are the restistins vho are kobbeled inn for regulating the generator..it sits behind the regulator(small metal cap)..vho koppels it inn /aut to hold voltage at cirka 13 volt..and use the ekstra power vhel lighting are not used..its a primitive load kontroll..used on this mid 70 " load systems...vho have 3 levells of delevery pover settings..all kontrolled of relæes in the littel metal box.

.by use light and ignision..the restision are not used..its are only aktive if fev pover users are onn...and not can "suck" the pover the generator deliveryes..and then it burns it off to heat..to protekt the battery for boiling off...modern systems use elektronic to kontroll more effektive..
i kan not speak english/but trying!!

As strynboen says, the green coil is the resistor that is part of the voltage regulator.

The rectifier is the black box below there with the rubber guard breaking off.

Looks to me like a 750.

For a long time I've wondered if you had a keyboard without a W on it, but now you made the mistake to do it right.
Please use it more often, English isn't my native language either, and while what you write usually is well worth reading, it sometimes is extremely difficult to understand.

I'm not sure about the black box, if your bike a 550f by chance? Year and model always help in the title or opening line of your question/post  ;) Can I see the back side of that black box?

Sorry I thought everyone on here was following my 1976 CB750F Super Sport thread :P  And thank you for the thorough answers, and comments, much appreciated.  Stop by for a drink on me when you get a chance ;)

I've always seen the voltage regulator mounted with the resistor "in" and the coils and points "out".   Does yours have a cover?  If so, the cover should have green, white, and black marks on it to show where the green, white, and black wires attach.

Black is from the battery.  Green is ground.   These two wires power the electromagnet coil in the regulator.  White goes to the alternator's field coil (another electromagnet) so the magnetic field in the alternator becomes stronger or weaker as needed.  As strynboen said, there are three states.  I'll call them full voltage, reduced voltage, and lowest voltage.

Modern voltage regulators control voltage by "leaking" some current to ground which drags down the voltage.  Modern alternators use permanent magnets and always generate everything they can at any RPM.  They are different, but not actually "better" than this older system.    This system with field coils generates only what's needed.

Well, since you got the answer you were looking for,  I thought I'd add a little humor. When I read the title of the thread, all I thought of was this...anyone else?
Who is your daddy and what does he do!? ;D
