630 to 530 chain conversion
« on: January 03, 2014, 08:04:07 AM »
I am looking to use a 530 chain on my '78.  I know the '77 and '78 came stock with the 630, and the '76 came stock with the 530 (and their corresponding sprockets as well).

Does anyone know if I could just order up some of the '76 stock sprockets and bolt them up? Or if there is any issues with doing so?  Thanks in advance!

Just to update that thread - that was almost three years ago. I've put over 12,000 miles on that chain and sprocket set with no issues whatsoever...other than the lousy fit of the front sprocket on the shaft. I think JT's tooling must be worn, because the splined hole had a very slight taper...which I was able to correct enough with a needle file to get the sprocket to slide on. Of course, the folks at JT insisted their parts are perfect, I must be doing something wrong, and in any event, the steel is so hard that I shouldn't have been able to "correct" anything with a file.  ::)

Just FYI, Parts Unlimited sells a sprocket which is a direct replacement for the original '76 750A Honda part #. Their part number is K22-2519. One on eBay right now.

Subject: General Question

Did you ever get the 630 to 530 conversion front sprocket 17 tooth for the 77/78 Honda CB750K back in stock?
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I have a 78 CB750A. I just bought the Parts Unlimited sprocket that chickenman suggested.

Any guidance on what size 530 chain is needed?

Thanks,
John

Hmmm... would you happen to have a link to the kit? I cant find it on sun stars site.

I also bought the parts unlimited front sprocket already so will have to piece together the kit. Looking at the kit would help me to know what else I need to buy.

Thanks,
John

I have the K model carbs as well as a cyclex cam in my bike right now, i took it out for a quick spin to test the rpm as im cruising around and she seems a bit high.  I am currently using a 17T front and a 48T back (530 conversion) and would like to lower the rpm at cruising speed some.  My options from Sunstar, that i see are (for the back):  38T, 40T, 43T, 45T .

Do you guys have any recommendations for what size i should lower to to achieve my goal of a lower RPM at ~60mph?  The more detail as to why, the better!  Thanks in advance!

Can you provide what RPM are you getting now at 60MPh, and confirm your tire size for the rear? Also, what do you believe is the target RPM you seek for the speed?

I would provide an RPM if I had a tach, but unfortunately I do not.  I am using the standard tire size for the '78 750a.  Unsure of RPM I am seeking to be exact.  All I know is it currently is wound more up than I would like at that speed.

I just bought a 43T for the rear.  Once spring hits I will let you guys know how she goes with it installed.  Damn MN winters!  At least I have a heated garage to tinker in! :)

definitely liking the 17-43. up to 80km/hr in 1st..
530 conversion from sunstar fit no issues whatsovver. Its rivet not clip link though so get the tool before your order ! nothing worse than a rebuilt rear end with just a link stopping a test ride..trust me
