it's that time of the year, so here is my little gift to the HiPo community


it's long, so if you dont have the time to sit down with a cigar and a glass of scotch to watch it all, the things starts to serious at about the 1 hour mark...

Only in Japan...

 Good to see those fellas struggling to get the crank out. ;D Those T handle tools are nice with that radius end.
  Latest Motorcyclist magazine has an on the Team Obsolete MV 4 cylinder 350 race bike. The MV looks like it was stored in a garden shed compared to the 166 in the video.

Another question is how they fit back the pistons from the bottom... The cyl block is one piece with top crankcase and the rods are roller bearing i.e.not openable... So you have to drop the crank togethr with inserting the rings!

I have to imagine there is a very generous taper at the bottom of the cylinders. You're right though....would be much more interesting watching the crank/pistons go in rather than out.

Well Yos and Mike, we do have a member that could have answered that problem but he's not been active on here in just over a year.
His user name is hondarc174 and the company he worked for replicated six RC174s copied from what was believed to be the last one made by Honda and was never raced.
The big Honda Blackbirds were built the same way with the block being part of the upper crankcase.
OK, the Blackbird was only a four banger and the crank throws would have been staggered differently but it must be doable.

It can't be that big of a deal, at least with race engines.  The Millar / Offy had the cylinder integral to the block in the 30's.

Don't disagree that the parts are tiny jewels Sam.  (Most) modern engines also have split big rods, so they install normally.  Any of the production bikes that used solid rods, and built cranks had removable cylinders.  All that said this is Honda, they likely had the "Special/Special Tool", or three people with VERY small hands to press / feed in the rings. ;D

Love it mate but bed calls, Christmas was yesterday here in jolly old England.
I use a totally different method to most when putting a motor together, I'll run it by you in the morning (my morning, haha)

900RR's, 600F4 etc were all integral cylinder/upper case. Pistons went in through the top....like a V8 etc. Things is those have 2 piece rods where the 166 use 1 piece. I imagine it takes a couple of people to get those pistons it but with a good chamfer at the bottom they probably rock in pretty easy.
 Big problem with that is everything is so tiny. Maybe they had petite Japanese woman building the engines? ;) I do know that years ago ( the early 90's) Ducati used a lot of woman on the engine building lines as they were reliable in regard to attention to detail. ;D ;D

The RC-30.....WOW. The only bike I wanted to buy but my wife Sue was pregnant. I would have one otherwise. Perfect machine....so Honda. I wanted an RC51 too.......I got that after fortunate circumstance. The RC-30.....I loved that bike.
 Honda....the BEST fellas at bikes. Period.
