Completely stumped on electrical problem
« on: June 16, 2015, 04:36:09 PM »
So I got my bike up and running (78 cb750K) and things were going great then I noticed after riding for an hour or so I had to kick start it to get running again. I read everything I could on the forums and figured either I didn't have it revving high enough to charge or there was a problem with my charging system.

Today after charging the battery overnight then letting it sit for 2 hours I checked it and it was reading somewhere around 12.8. I put it in the bike and it fired right up. I then checked the charge I was getting when revving and these were my results:

Immediately after starting at idle I was getting 12.5
When I would rev and hold it around 4500 rpm I would get up to 16

I immediately backed off when I saw it get higher than 15 and just let it idle some more. When I tried it again after the bike had warmed up I could rev it as high as I wanted and it wouldn't go past 14.8.

I then shut the bike off to disconnect the multimeter and when I went to start it again just a few minutes later I wasn't getting power. The battery is still reading a good charge and none of the fuses are blown. Can anybody shed some light on this? I have no idea what happened.

When you say "No power" do you mean no electrical service at all to the bike after turning the key and KILL switch? No lights, no crank, no nothing?

If so, I'd immediately turn my attention to the key switch and verify that you reconnected the red wire from the key to POS and the battery NEG is tight to the frame.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Just came to say I figured it out and saw your reply. It was the ignition switch. I jumped the red wire to the black and everything came to life.
