New acquisition: 79 cb750F
« on: June 08, 2015, 08:27:28 AM »
Just picked this thing up from an old friend of mine. It's been sitting a little while, but is in pretty good condition. Needs a rectifier and a good cleaning. And a paint job because right now- not much of a looker. I don't care for that diamond seat either.

In 1981, I traded in my 1975 metal flake orange CB550K on a brand new silver and blue CB750F.

This was right after friends and I had ridden to Mt. St. Helens from Saskatchewan to see the aftermath of the eruption.

The '81 was a nice bike, like yours, but for me never had quite that same SOHC feeling.

Personal preference, I guess...

It is a good looking bike imo.  Lots of potential there.

Not bad for 500.00. Clean title and near running condition. I think it needs those original pinstripes to look right though.

Don't worry SOHC friends, I'm still building my 500 and it's nearly done! (I hope)

Could you verify for me that the Comstars are tubeless?

I don't know the answer to that one. I'll have to check them out. I do know that they call for tubes on my 78 cb400 comstars.

I have 78 comstars for tubes on my K3F project, but I believe in 79 they went tubeless while the wheels will still fit in the 78 swingarm and fork.

If and when you have time to check, let me know please :)

I have a near mint '79... black in color. Google some period tests, they were one of the best handling/performing bikes of their time. Carbs are a pain to clean though. Mike Nixon's website has great how to instructions to clean and set them up properly.

If you find yourself wanting more power install a set of 900 cams. The 750's DOHC'S are notoriously under-cammed.

I have a 1100F intake cam and a 900F exhaust cam in mine and I got a GREAT increase in power, especially down low :)

PS Rims are tubeless.

Good advise Kay. I was going over the service records. I was hoping that my friend had overhauled the engine, but that doesn't look like the case. If I do, I'll look into the  900 cam. A lot of other stuff was done, including two carb rebuilds/cleanings, fork rebuilds, brakes, rotors, etc. My friend got clipped twice by cars when he lived in Milwaukee, but no structural damage.
