Some of us ARE engineers, and we might have the best shot at making pods work.
(quote)
That's the ironic part. The ones who could actually make pods work REALLY amazing are the one's who would never do it, haha. (quote)

I'll bet an engineer that also happens to be a rocket scientist could make pods work REALLY REALLY amazing.

It just so happens I am a rocket scientist.....but that's for another thread.
lol

Dave,
This debate is MUCH better over beer!
And for my "test" I would want to use a well tuned (dyno tuned) bike with pods.
Really the idea would be to once and for all put this to bed.

Oil and Pods, 2 very sensitive subjects to discuss. It's like politics or religion. I'm sure that Aleister Crowley had pods if he had a bike back in time  ::)
One more thing, pods need to be impregated with oil... mineral or synthetic? :D My rattle can of KN filter oil I bought for over 30 years ago was still working one year ago!

But seriously... no engine mods, why remove a working air box and correct jetted carbs? Make another box, shiny metal....
The suction noice from the carbs can be irritating.

Upon that if using flat slide carbs with clattering throttles, clap-clap-clap-clap......!!!! I was happy to adjust carbs + ignition for low idle... I have to increase idle rpm to avoid the throttle clatter. My first reaction when hearing it was a missing lash cap or valve adjuster screw going loose.... I understood after 10 seconds that the sound came from the carbs, especially cyl1 carb.
Opened the carb upper cover to ensure that the screw holding needle and throttle was tightened.
Adjusted ignition when I thought it could have too much advance on low. Could retard a little bit but it was still clatter.
I understood that it must be normal flat slide noice and google carb clatter and verified normal flat slide sound... clap-clap-clap... ??? Increase idle....

We'd need that dyno test to prove your point and then a ride with those two bikes through a city to see how many girls wink at which rider...to prove my point, haha.

I had my stock CB450 out for a ride one day with a friend that had a brand new 1199s.
He was SO bent at the end of the day.  All the girls liked my bike better.

As to the OP.
Buy a few complete sets of brass and tune.
WAY to many variables for the internet to give a definitive answer as far as jetting.

I'd like to think it has nothing to do with the bike but I haven't been able to confirm that yet ;)

Not trying to give him a definitive answer, just a decent idea where to start. To show that I have somewhat of an idea how to tune a carbureted bike I am including the dyno chart of my 550K. Slipon pipe, modded airbox lid, shimmed needles, bigger mains, slotted ignition plate holes to advance ignition. Bike was tuned by me through trial and error with no jet kit. Dyno run was done after tuning was completed to check results. Check the air/fuel ratio. 14 horsepower and 8 foot pounds of torque increase over stock, super flat torque curve and awesome throttle response. I generally try not to piss into the wind when I modify a bike.

seriously though...I got this thing to run good with just a main jet swap and some detailed attention to the float level.  Does it run as good as the stock airbox?...nope...but pretty close...really just wanted to play around with a cool old part.  I don't even really think it looks better than the stock airbox.
If it works good, it looks good...

What jets you running in that?  I got the same one.  It works ok.  Kinda cool.  I run 125 but have some super-pipe that apparently wants lots of gas.

Very nice nice bike!  Looks great.  You said you changed the float height?  What height are you running?
