Why you do think a long gun is less safe if loaded in public places than a sidearm is? Both are loaded, both have a mechanical safety, and both are at the disposal of the good judgement (hopefully) of the person carrying them. Now, an open carry long gun probably makes people more nervous than a sidearm, I'll agree with that. But less safe? I'm not with you-
I'm talking about public perception. I can safely carry a loaded long gun in public, round in the chamber, safety on, but would I? Probably not, because it scares the otherwise long gun ignorant public. When I conceal carry, no one knows, so no one freaks out, etc. I would feel more comfortable if I saw someone open carry a long gun, like an AR, if it didn't have a magazine in the well, with the bolt locked to the rear. I'm not saying they shouldn't open carry their long gun, just do it so the general public doesn't freak out. There has to be some balance between exercising your 2A right and freaking out the public.
