New guy in Tucson
« on: June 13, 2015, 01:28:37 PM »
Howdy from Tucson Az!  I brought my new '78 CB750K home last night.  I bought it off of Cycle Trader from a guy up in Prescott Az.  It was a long day and a lot of miles, but it was parked in my shop last night albeit on my trailer.  This is my 3rd SOHC 4.  First was a '69 back in 1970, then a '76 F about ten years ago.  I've  been riding most of my life, the last 20 on H-Ds.  Still have a '09 Road Glide for touring, but wanted something a bit more nimble for around town.

So, this new project had a Vetter/Windjammer fairing complete with lower panels and the common sissy bar and luggage rack.  These parts are now on the floor of my garage never to be back on this K8 bike.  Originally I had planned to restore this bike to stock condition, but the more I looked at it and removed stuff this morning, I'm now thinking resto with a taste of cafe style.  I got the engine to run, but it wouldn't idle at all. Lots to check on, but I broke for lunch.

Anyways, just thought I'd introduce myself today as the K8 is now mine.  I'm very impressed with the knowledge base and friendly attitude on this site.

Update to my K8.  Carbs cleaned (twice) and installed. Air box back on and I'll be damned, it runs pretty fair.  It even will idle at about 1k rpm.  Next item is to finish rebuilding the petcock and trying to find a replacement oil line from the tank to the engine.  I know I need to sync the carbs, but other stuff will come first.

Major progress today!

Tom

Howdy back there CycleRanger!

Not sure if this will work, but here goes.  This is how the bike came home two weeks ago today.  I pulled the Vetter/Windjammer fairing and lowers off, sissybar,  luggage rack and started work on getting it running.

Looks like the pics appeared!  You can teach an old dog a new trick or two.....

The stock pipes look to be in pretty good shape. Paint doesn't look too bad either.

This bike is what I refer to as a 20 foot bike.  From 20 feet, not bad....  The stock pipes are OK, but one has been repaired badly.  The good news is on the way to pick up this bike, I bought a set of stock pipes and I believe I can make a decent set of four from the two sets.  The paint is fair, but it will be changed.  I'm encouraged that the engine seems pretty solid and sounds good.  Lots to do, but I've got another bike to ride.
