Hi from San Francisco
« on: June 18, 2015, 06:27:50 PM »
Just dropped in to see what condition my con....wait, wrong forum!

Anyway, I just rebooted my motorcycle life after a five year hiatus...had something to do with not paying enough attention to traffic while riding a Yamaha RD350 in Golden Gate Park. No permanent injuries, but looking elsewhere when a tourist stopped in the middle of MLK drive dictated that I make it to retirement age before I resumed riding. Once again, someone can make that lethal mistake for you, and constant vigilance is a must on two wheels.

So, the golden years have found me riding a 1976 CB750K! Just bought the bike a month ago, got it fairly well sorted/tuned/bolted together and am enjoying having a new toy to wrench and ride upon. Biggest bike I've had since a '79 CB750F I had back in nursing school, and still an amazing ride. I have no desire to try one of the current hyper-whatevers, because my 1969 frame of performance reference is totally satisfying as-is, and I'd like to keep it that way. For a while.

My Honda was moderately "cafe-ed" with low bars, 4-1 exhaust, pod filters, Ikon rear shocks, solo seat and, best of all, genuine Spanish Akront shouldered alloy rims with SS spokes. First day of ownership found me staying up half the night just polishing the rims...always loved that look. Got a new o-ring chain and sprockets, new battery and fixed the handlebar switches so I now have a horn and functional electric starter.

The tires....not so much. Has a 110/80-19 Avon Distenzia (sounds like a hepatic symptom) dated 2008 on the front, and a newer Bridgestone Spitfire 130/80-18 on the back; looks pretty overstuffed and not particularly confidence inspiring to ride. Just ordered a pair of period appropriate Metzeler Lasertechs from BikeBandit; should be good fun wrestling tires off and on the Akronts!

Thinking also of a dual disc front brake setup...don't really need the stopping power, but again, always loved that look and it seems fairly straightforward to accomplish.

The immediate task at hand is get it roadworthy and get some miles under my belt...really looking forward to some group rides1

Really happy to finally have one of these iconic machines, and equally pleased to join a forum dedicated to their performance and preservation.

Thank you!!!

Marc, hi from Tucson.  I'm in the process of getting a new to me '78 back on the road.  I'd be interested in seeing some pics of your bike.  Mine had a fairing and a bunch of other stuff hung on it.  All of that is off now, but I'm trying to decide which direction to take this resto/mod.

Welcome.
