Added another horse to the stable
« on: June 13, 2015, 02:19:46 PM »
Found this 1980 CB650 Custom on craigslist the other day and decided to go look at it today. Ended up bringing it home, and for what I paid for it it was a pretty good deal. All it really needs is a front tire and some carb work.
Pros:
-Only 6300 miles
-All original parts
-No holes in the stock exhaust, no patches either
-Paint is in really good shape save for 1 small scratch
-Clean title
-Absolutely ZERO rust anywhere on this bike
-Did i mention it only has 6300 miles??

Cons:
-Leaking head gasket (and looks like somebody squirted some rtv sealant around the leaking area to try and stem the leak a little)
-Only runs with the choke fully on
-Pisses gas out of the overflow tubes
-Handlebars are a little tweaked, might swap those out for some 400F bars or something similar
-Missing a few engine mounting bolts

Honestly I bought this to flip and make some money but after seeing it's condition I'm having a really hard time convincing myself to sell it.....

Looks nice.
Only runs on choke  and pissing overflows will be fixed when you clean out the carbs, there's two cons off the list.
I always thought those bars were crap ,even the straight ones, it's usually one of the first things I change on a 650.
Missing engine mounts? don't see that often, with out help from the PO anyways.
Head gasket.... well you're gonna get to know this engine.
Good looking machine.

What's up with bikes missing engine mounts??  This is the second 650 in a week (DaveBarbier, too) with missing mounts.

It's otherwise a pretty clean machine, needing a carb cleaning.

Haha, I was JUST about to post that. What gives? Someone is walking around with a bunch of engine mounts in their pocket with a sinister grin on their face.

MrFish, I have a bunch of spare parts (I'll admit, not in the greatest shape) that I'm selling off for cheap. If you want/need any parts, let me know. It's an '82 650sc. Not entirely sure they cross pollinate, though. Will have to go to CMSNL to verify part numbers.

Maybe the bikes had crash bars that were taken off and the bolts were never replaced?

My current project, a 550F, had crash bars that I just took off, and now has 1 missing bolt! [til I sourced ta proper length bolt]

That's what I'm assuming happened to this one. What's funny is that the guy i bought it from never noticed the mounting bolts were missing haha. I was looking at every nook and cranny on the bike, noticed the missing bolts, and heard him mumble "well I'll be damned..." haha.

I've actually got another 82 650 Nighthawk I've been trying to part out myself haha. If you run across any standard length fork tubes i might be interested in those, because the Custom bike have tubes that are 2in longer than the standard model and i don't like them.

I always thought those bars were crap ,even the straight ones, it's usually one of the first things I change on a 650.

What kind of bars would you recommend? I was thinking some 400F, Superbike, or Euro bars might do the trick.

Either of those bars would be a vast improvement over stock bars.
