Why not charge fees here for sales???
« on: June 15, 2015, 07:52:52 AM »
I am curious why the site doesn't charge a small fee to list items for sale? It would help fund the site and keep away those people who come here to merely sell an item. It will also give some assurance that those who do come here to sell is somewhat legit as they would have to pay a small fee.

I have no problem paying a small fee. I am not sure if others do so please chime in. Maybe have a fee scale broken down by the amount of post one has??? Depending on price of an item???? After say 2k post you have to pay a set amount???

Just throwing this out there. I know the site is maintained by small donations but this may be able to help to continue the sites improvements??? Maybe an IT/ computer whiz can chime in as well....

I think that it would be hard to charge a fee per item. Also might be a bad idea, because it could discourage people selling small stuff. I believe there are many members here selling small parts just to help others get their bikes on the road, and a per item, or per listing fee may make them feel like it's not worth it.

I personally have no problem with a fee. Another forum I belong to (not motorcycle related) requires a small yearly fee to list items for sale in classified section. The section can be viewed for free, everything else is free, but you cannot post a new sale thread unless. Just another idea.

stryn- No pay to give away free items. Lots have done that. As stated prior this is simply a question. Curious of other thoughts

Because no one would post parts for sale here if it wasnt free.

Why do you feel the urge to want to pay, or impose that on other people?

Running a website, especially forums, is an expensive undertaking. I wouldn't mind having to pay a yearly fee if it'll keep the forums up and running.

The internet should be free!
I know that I would not post parts here if there was a fee.
Any fee would then compete with the eBay fee, and I see the eBay fee as being much more worth it.

I am not imposing anything on anyone. It is merely to help support the site and deter those who come here to make a quick buck because they are to cheap to list on Ebay.

I'd actually PREFER they came here first to sell their parts before they are listed on ebay  ::)

relevance to the site could be more valuable than what a price tag would generate. it would filter me right out.

I used to be in web development (still dabble in it); what fees are associated with the site? Just hosting and domain? Or are there fees to use the forum software package? Just curious what annual costs look like. I think the classified posts by the none 'regular members' are few and far between and like flybox said... at least they're hitting here and not just eBay! If you're gonna charge to sell, you might as well charge to join. (Note: I don't suggest you do either!)

I think post-count is a good idea to filter the classified sellers (if that's what you want to do). At least 10 posts maybe? When I see someone posting in classifieds after only posting once or twice or whatever, I just roll my eyes... and then take a closer look at what they're selling!

There is already a function to donate to the site to keep it running. Free parts are nice and extremely generous, but maybe instead of being completely free, the guy getting the $10 part for free throws the site a donation of $2-3? Or every time a part changes hands, no matter the cost, each guy puts up $1. Its not so much a fee for using the site. Look at it as helping maintain a place where people with the same passion can gather. If you can't throw up $1 every now and then, you probably shouldn't have internet or an SOHC Honda.
All you gotta do is do what you gotta do.

I think its better to encourage people to donate when they can.
It must be easier to donate after a successful rebuild/restore thanks to all help found in all old threads and people answering questions.

Hell, do an annual fund drive at the end of the year. I'm sure you'd be covered if every member gave a $1.

I PM'd the mod suggesting a resources page.  He could sign the site up as an affilate of different merchants and get a small kickback to help keep the site running.

How many post are there on where do I buy such and such.  Take those and stick them into a resources section.  The site owners / managers can make a little money that way.

Don't like the idea of fees in the for sale section though.  That smacks of Ebay.  Ebay used to be cheap and now they want alot and do very little to help sellers there.

Ok Resources Section Let's get the list party started.

Just donate some lucre to the site.  There's a link set up already.  Think of how much you get from the site, and giving back a few bucks.

I don't know what it costs to run this place, but I'm sure its a substantial amount. What's a few bucks (or reasonable amount) per member/ year? I'd think based on what people are looking for and what's offered here,
a small fee wouldn't be out of order. Where else can you get so much of everything sohc4? Think about that.
And AFAIK, the MODS donate their time. Thank you gentlemen...On that note, I'm gonna go donate.

I think a post count is a good thing. It keeps people from coming here for no other reason than to sell something. But then again. If I were selling something and not looking at it from a sellers eyes but from a buyers eyes I would want to show it where the most exposure is and if that's a CB related item this is the place. I wouldn't like the penalty of having to pay just to offer you guys first dibs.
Also a time frame for the posts so you don't get the moron that comes in and needs 20 posts before they can submit a sale ad, so they go to every post they can and just reply "yup" , or Hey.  And after 4 minutes of replies goes in and posts his sale ad. The ads here also bring noobs here looking for parts and may end up being a contributor.
