Hello from South Carolina
« on: April 16, 2015, 10:04:46 AM »
Hey folks

I've been a member here for a few years using the resources you have to help restore and rebuild a few bikes.  I thought I'd say hello finally and maybe now I won't be too chicken to post on the forum.  You all have been invaluable to find answers to my difficult restoration and customization questions.  I've had 2 750s and 1 500 now.  After just finishing the "woody" 750 2 weeks ago I'm turning to a 78 750 to get it back on the road and dress it up a little bit too.

here's "woody" before

and after

Here is the 500 which I sold last May

I'm actually close to Charlotte in Fort Mill.  I would love to ride more but current health issues are putting a damper on that (herniated disk).  Will you be at the meltdown vintage show in Hendersonville next weekend?  I've registered so will be there whether I ride or not.

Thank you.  A lot of people ask if it's a vinyl wrap or if it's hand stenciled but I did it via hydrographics.  So technically it's a 2 stage paint with an extra step between the base and clear.  I made an embossed points cover (3d printed) and dipped it to match as well.  I could talk for hours about all the one off details!

I really should have posted a "build" thread here on the forum but was a little afraid being that it was so different from what folks are used to seeing/liking.  Oh well, I'm here now  :)

Thank you.  I can't seem to access the gallery to upload photos, or is there a better place to do it?  I can embed photos in the post like I've been doing also.  Since I have finished the bike I don't think I need to do a build thread now.

Welcome to the forum....................

I watched the build thread in another forum......I just wouldn't have the confidence or patience to do that paint job.......really takes some good nerves to do something like that.

Guess I'm lazy.....still have my 350f tins ready to be painted, might "git'r done" this year.
If it ain't raining, I'm riding.....~~{iii}?~~prost

If it sounds like I know what I'm talking about, it's because I cut and pasted from someone else.

Beautiful paint.  A step-by-step thread on the paint process?

Wow!  What a bike, it will get nominated for sure.

BTW running little bit lean isn't it?

Thanks guys.  Actually it's more on the rich side above the idle circuit.  I need to move the needle clips up a notch when I have a chance (back to factory position).  The bluing was on the header pipes when I got the bike  :(  I think that really lets it down and perhaps I should just break down and get a new exhaust.

I did it via hydrographics, or water transfer printing.  Dipped one side at a time, then clearcoated (3 coats), then sanded, then applied the graphics and stripes, painted black, then 5 more coats of clear.  It will be nice when I have my spray booth built here at my new house! If you've painted outside you know how fun it can be getting crud out of the clear and polishing it.

I was in Rock Hill a couple of weeks ago on the hunt for some parts. Know a guy called Toolshed? He didn't have what I needed guess he was misinformed, but a good guy. Gave me a vintage wall hanger helmet for the wasted trip! :) I wouldn't exactly say down the road lol but, it would be a nice ride on the bike when I get her finished.

Very, very impressive, FGK!  Welcome to the Forum.  Is the wood pattern floating on a liquid that you dip the tank into for application?  Do you have any additional photos or details on the application and what else can be rendered?
