Oil Gauge
« on: October 23, 2006, 04:39:26 PM »
So I just got an oil gauge in the mail and there is a small bubble (air?) in the face. Is it still OK or do I cantact the sell and try to get a new one?

Thanks everyone,
Buck

What do you mean in the face?  Shouldn't the whole face (part under the glass with the needle) be filled with air, or maybe this is a type of gauge I've never seen before.

It looks like, and I am no expert on motorcycle gauges, that the face is filled with a fluid like with expensive/accurate compass and there is an air bubble in the fluid.

If it looks like the fluid is meant to be there, I'm sure it's fine.  The oil pressure never actually comes into contact with the space above the gauge face, and vice versa, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Edit: I've just realized why there's fluid.  It's probably being used as a damper, like in compasses, so the needle doesn't swing back and forth super quickly.  It's fine.

In liquid filled gauges the air bubble is to prevent the glass from breaking or leakage during heat (the liquid expands).  Not sure about freezing, the liquid gauges are good to -20F (cant remember) mabey less.  A good gauge should always have a bubble, if not a good warranty.

Re liquid filled gauge:
I had one for all of 1 day. The next day I was in the ferry line and about to board the boat when I noticed oil under the bike.  :o
Did not go on my trip, went home and realized all the fluid in the gauge was dripping out the bottom. I was told it was one in a million..........it was replaced with a smile by seller.
anyway, check to make sure the rubber stopper that holds the "fluid" in..stays in.  Not sure why mine fell out.

Probably because it was afraid of the massive K8 it was installed on. ;D

Lurking is good. It gives you a chance to suss out the neighbours. We don't bite. We do show our fangs (in the nicest possible way, of course) from time to time.
