Rear shock removal with 4-4 exhaust - CB750K4
« on: October 21, 2006, 10:25:46 AM »
Ok next question..I need to replace the shocks on my K4 as they were bottoming out with the girl on the back last week (and she thin!)....has anyone successfully removed the rear shocks with the 4-4 exhaust still in place?? Looks to me like it has to be removed to replace the shocks since the lower bolt needs the clearance...any thoughts? And I dont want to do that today...not may riding days left here in Boston :-(

cheers
Andy

I've had sucess with just loosening the header clamp, removing the footpeg/exhaust bolt, and pulling the muffler away from the swing arm just far enough to get the lower shock bolt out.

Hello Andy,

I have replaced my rear shocks on my '74 cb750 K4 without loosening or removing my exhausts.

I loosened the bottom bolt of the shock as much as I could.  Then I placed some rags against the chrome finish of the exhaust pipes.  You should have the shock absorber's top bolt "cap" off; it will help in the positioning of the bottom part of the shock.  Then I pryed gently and judiciously with a prybar against the rags on the exhaust; the bolt came out, the shock came off.  I used the same method to reinstall the bolt on the new shock.

Never had any problems, nothing got "tweaked."  I believe I saved myself a lot of unnecessary headaches and work.  It was a fine fix for me; I think it should be able to work for you........ 8)

Undo top nut both sides and pull mount off stud, lift wheel up till shocker bottom bolt accesible.
