I've been cheating
« on: October 27, 2006, 07:46:57 PM »
I have been active on this forum for a few weeks because I went to the dark side and bought another project.

I bought a '96 Polaris Xpress 300 ATV to fix up for my son and I to use for hunting.

Well I found out tonight why I got such a good price.
The gearcase cover is broken in two places and a new replacement is about $300.  I only paid $500 for the whole ATV.

Does anyone know of a good forum for ATVs?

How about a good web site for used ATV parts besides Ebay and Craigs List?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Scott

I'm with Tom, can you just weld it ?

I'm going to ask a neighbor, mechanic friend of mine about welding.  I think one trick might be is that the swing arm is also supported by this piece.

I appreciate the deal I got and yes $800 would still be a good price, I just wish the seller would have been up front (I think he knew) and I would have know what kind of work I have to look forward to.
I guess I should have known since this ATV was originally used commercially on a grass farm.

Anyway thanks for the comments and I'll keep looking for a good used part for a bit.

Thanks,
Scott

Hey Scott, if you don't find a used one and get yours welded, maybe the case could be braced somehow (where the swing arm is supported, if it is). Just a thought.

The gearcase cover is made of what looks like cast aluminum.
It looks like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-POLARIS-TRAIL-BLAZER-250-SCRAMBLER-TRANSMISSION_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43972QQihZ001QQitemZ110048133123QQrdZ1

Can this stuff really be welded?

Thanks,
Scott

I would start bidding on that tranny if it fits....all the way up to $300...the cost of that case.

What he said. Then you've got an ATV, with a spare trans, for well less than a grand! Still sounds like some kind of bargain to me ;D

"The only damage is on the right side where the swingarm bolt end goes into the side , there are a few chips in the casting. Tjis ins not a major thing. It does not leak, as it is just a small piece chipped."

Must be a pretty common problem.  All of the used transmissions I've seen have some sort of damage to that area.

Usually its because they are overloaded they snap bits off. On any sort of farm its probably been cayying as much as coujd be fitted onto racks and still move. You shouldnt have any problems if you get it welded up and dont overload it. Check to see what the weight limit should be (probably around 250~300 lbs) it will probably carry a lot mre than that but will break stuff
